The Director of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), William Akwasi Appiah has been relieved of his post.

The Minister of National Security, Albert Kan Dapaah, confirmed the news.

He has been replaced by the Director-General at the Research Department responsible for External Intelligence at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Rasheed Seidu Inusah.

The deputy Director-General of the Research Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Peter Nyarko Opata has been moved to take over from Rashid Inusah.

“Yes, there has been some changes. We’re issuing a statement to that effect soon,” Mr. Dapaah said.

The decision, Newstube24.com understands, was taken at a meeting held at the BNI headquarters in Accra Thursday afternoon.

A statement signed and issued in Accra by the Minister for Information, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, said the BNI has been reassigned to the Ministry of National Security.

It is unclear the reasons behind the changes at the fortified investigative edifice, however, sources say it may be linked to the arrest of deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Koku Anyidoho and how some opposition officials including former President John Mahama had access to him while behind bars.
