The World Health Organization (WHO) has intervened to support Ghana contain the spread of the deadly pneumococcal meningitis.
The death toll, according to health officials has hit 32 in the Brong Ahafo and Northern Regions.
WHO has offered to provide some logistical support to the Ghana Health Service(GHS) to confront the situation, the Disease Prevention and Control Officer at the WHO,Sally Ann Ohene told journalists in Accra.
“WHO has been working with the Ministry of Health throughout this outbreak that has been occurring. The support we have been giving has come in the form of making available the rapid diagnostic test kits that enables the diagnosis of Meningitis.”
The widespread disease which has currently hit the Brong Ahafo and the Northern regions of Ghana with reported cases of over 90 are being handled in major health facilities within these regions.
Pneumococcal Meningitis is a deadly disease in which there is swelling and irritation (inflammation) of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord (meninges).
The disease is caused by viral or bacterial infection, with symptoms like intense headache and fever, sensitivity to light, and muscular rigidity.
