Mahama’s conduct has been a credit to Ghana – Akufo Addo

President Nana Akufo Addo has expressed the country’s gratitude to ex President John Dramani Mahama for supervising a peaceful transition of power to his (Akufo Addo) government which assumed power on January 7, 2017.

According to him, irrespective of all the settlement issues surrounding ex President Mahama, he must be commended for seeing to a smooth transfer of power, a development which is not common on the African continent.

The Ghanaian media space was last week filled with news relating to the retirement settlement of ex President John Mahama following news that he’d requested that the residence in which he lived as the sitting president should be given to him as part of his retirement package.

The issue sparked agitation among a section of the public who urged President Akufo Addo to decline ex President Mahama’s request as it will set a bad precedence.

Following the controversy, Mr Mahama in a letter to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo rescinded his interests in his current place of residence, No. 3 Prestige Link, Cantonments and his proposed office, No. 6, 3rd Avenue , Ridge, all in Accra.

He explained that the requests have threatened the relationships between the current New Patriotic Party government and his former government.

“It would appear that these requests threaten to mar the spirit of cooperation with which we as co-chairs of the joint transition team have managed the smooth transfer of power from my administration to yours. I believe that this controversy is absolutely not needed in these early days as the government settles into office,” Mr Mahama wrote.

“I do recognise that these are facilities that are conventionally extended to presidents that leave office and I am also mindful of the approval by the Parliament of the republic of Ghana on Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at its 22nd sitting of the third meeting of the 4th session.

In the letter which was copied to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Mr Mahama also accused some persons in government of creating the false impression that he requested to purchase the property.

But President Akufo Addo while speaking at a thanksgiving service organized for him by his chirch, the Accra Ridge Church on Sunday January 15, to thank God for his election and successful swearing in as the Fifth 5th President of the Fourth Republic said ex President Mahama must be celebrated for his statemanship.

“Our thanks on this occasion goes to my predessessor the President John Mahama, who followed in the worthy footsteps of his illustrous predessessors, the President Jerry John Rawlings, the President John Agyekum Kufour and supervised a peaceful transmission of power. Despite the controversies surrounding his settlement, his conduct has been a credit to the nation and we must all give thanks to the Almight God.”

Opuni’s sack from COCOBOD welcome news – NDC Organizer

The Greater Accra Regional Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Anthony Nukpenu has described the sacking of the Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, Dr. Stephen Opuni as welcome news and a good riddance.

President Nana Akufo Addo relieved Dr Opuni of his position with a letter signed by the Executive Secretary to the president Nana Asante Bediatuo.asking the latter to vacate post not later than 5:00pm Friday, January 13, 2017.

The directive, the letter said, is pursuant to section 14(1) of the Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012 (Act 845).

“In view of the urgency attached to this matter, please ensure that you hand over and cease to act as Chief Executive of Ghana Board not later than 5:00pm on January 13, 2017,” the letter said.

The directive is part of the president’s effort to constitute his government and deliver on the promises made during the campaign.

Dr Opuni was appointed Chief Executive of Ghana COCOBOD on 30th November, 2013.

His tenure at COCOBOD was characterized by allegations of corruption over the years, which sparked calls for his sack. Both the General Agricultural Workers Union and the Industrial Commercial Workers Union have accused Dr Opuni of corruption and condemned his leadership style, which they contended was militating against the growth of the cocoa sector.

“The orruption going on in the COCOBOD under Dr Stephen Opuni must be exposed as a matter of citizen responsibility. It is important not to personalise this issue, we don’t have any personal problem with Dr Stephen Opuni. “In doing things that are not right, he has not respected the labour laws of this country. We have talked about that in our press conference held about a week ago” General Secretary if GAWU Kingsley Offei Nkansah said on April 29, 2016.

He’s a known member of the NDC and was also accused of using proceeds from the sale of cocoa to fund the NDC’s electioneering campaign during the December 2016 general elections. But he appears to have stepped on a lot of toes of senior NDC members with his perceived poor human relations.

Speaking to Kasapa News, Anthony Nukpenu expressed hope that Dr Opuni having been sacked will now stop being arrogant and learn how to respect his fellow human beings.

“Opuni as CEO of FDA before going to COCOBOD never showed respec to NDC senior members, he disrespected virtually everyone in the party. I’m wondering which executive in NDC will sympathize with him having been booted out of office. He deserves even more than the kind of letter that was given him because he’s such a disrespectful person to his fellow human beings. Over time many people felt that he would change with respect to his bad human relation but sadly, he never changed. Knowing the kind of enemies he’s created at COCOBOD, I least expected him to stay in office to be sacked by a new President. That is a shame. As he exits that office, he should learn to live well with his fellow human beings.”

NPP snubs NDC on reprisal attacks…says it can fight back with equal strength

The leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said it will fight back with the measurable strength should the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) decide to create chaos, and unleash any attack on its members.

It will be recalled that the National Chairman of the NDC, Mr Kofi Portuphy, in the company of some national executives of the party at a press conference last week, blamed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the rampaging youth of the party who are going about taking over public facilities and creating chaotic scenes in some instances.

He said, among other things, that “Nana Akufo-Addo’s lack of positive and unifying leadership skills as an opposition leader seriously wounded the NPP. Never should he mislead himself into believing that Ghanaians shall allow him to wound and divide this dear country of ours.”

“The beastly conduct of Nana Akufo-Addo’s Invincible Forces will no longer be countenanced. We are calling on civil societies, religious bodies, the media and the international community not to blame the NDC if the unacceptable conduct of Akufo-Addo’s Invincible Forces leads to reprisal attacks.”

But the Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Nana Obiri Boahene who addressed a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down, Wednesday, said it is about time the Police act decisively on reports of alleged seizure of state property by persons perceived to be supporters of the NPP.

He debunked claims by the Chairman of the NPP, Kofi Portuphy that the leadership of the NPP has remained quite while their supporters go on rampage to seize state properties and in the process causing mayhem to supporters of the NDC.

Mr. Portuphy, he said, in 2009 led a group of NDC thugs to seize the offices of NADMO, noting that he has no moral authority to speak on the matter.

Four ministerial nominees will today, Friday January 20 come face to face with the Appointment Committee of Parliament as they are vetted.

The first to take his turn will be Senior Minister designate, Hon. Yaw Osafo Marfo followed by Kan Dapaah, who will head the Security Ministry. Finance Minister-nominee, Ken Ofori-Atta, as well as nominee for Defense, Dominic Nitiwul will then take their turns.

The Minority members on the Committee have vowed to subject the ministerial nominees to rigourous questioning, an exercise that will be in the interest of the state.

Ahead of today’s vetting the Minority side on Thursday claimed they were yet to be given the Curriculum Vitae of the Ministerial nominees a day to the beginning of their vetting.

Member of Parliament for Tamale North and a member of the minority side of the committee, Alhassan Suhuyini in an interview with CITI FM, disclosed that several efforts to secure the CVs of the nominees before their vetting commences on Friday had proven futile.

He said the delay in providing them with the CVs of the nominees is intended to frustrate them, adding that this behaviour is condemnable.

“The people of Ghana want us to ask the relevant questions especially about the caliber of people that are going to be working for them. And so, we think that it is unacceptable. We don’t want them to give us the CVs tomorrow morning when we are supposed to be vetting the nominees,” he noted.

World Bank misled Ghana in the collapse of Bank for Housing& Const. – Osafo Maafo

The Senior Minister designate, Yaw Osafo Maafo has said it was regrettable for the system to allow the Bank for Housing and Construction to collapse.

Mr. Yaw Osafo Maafo reiterated that the World Bank misled the country over the collapse of the facility because in his view, “the reasons assigned to the collapse of the bank were not tenable.”

The bank was liquidated following heavy losses, official sources said at the time.

The bank was closed down by the Central bank and the government because sources said, the liabilities of the bank exceeded its asset which affected its ability to satisfy the capital adequacy and minimum capital required under the banking law.

The country’s housing needs is in short supply of 1.7 million units, and is projected to climb to two million by 2018, analysts say.

The situation required the introduction of pragmatic and deliberate policies and private sector participation to raise supply in the sector.

Commenting on the growing Housing deficit in Ghana, during his vetting Friday, Mr. Osafo Maafo said:”We need a bank that can provide medium to long term funds to make the housing industry work.”

“You cannot use commercial bank funds to support housing and therefore we have to think through this again and see the best way forward…Mortgage financing is not medium term, It is long term. People should be paying between 10 to 25 years,” he said.

Mr. Osafo-Maafo is an engineer and a project analyst by training and he established his credentials as a banking and finance leader by heading and successfully restructuring two major Ghanaian banks, the Bank for Housing and Construction and the National Investment Bank between 1979 and 1992.

We’ll lay off workers whose names appear on payroll after Dec 2016 – Osafo Marfo

Senior Minister designate, Yaw Osafo Marfo has revealed that the Akufo Addo-led government will not hessitate in sacking all public sector workers whose names were put on the payroll after December 2016.

According to him, he as the leader of the then incoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) Transitional Team agreed with the former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah who headed the Transitional Team of the then outgoing National Democratic Congress (NDC) government that there should not be any employment and procurement immediately after the new President had been declared, in order to ensure a smooth transition exercise.

There have been numerous reports that the NDC government after losing the December 7 elections employed several persons into the public sector.

Former Deputy Attorney General and former MP for Nsuta Kwamang Beposo, Osei Kwame Prempeh for instance alleged on Oman FM that the NDC administration employed as much as 11,000 workers in the public sector between December 7, 2016 and January 7, 2017.

“The recruitment was done in the Tema Port too and all these happened during the transition period,” he said.

According to him, it was because of this last minute employment that NPP supporters decided to besiege some public institutions, threatening to eject the workers.

Speaking during his vetting in Accra on Friday, Hon. Osafo Marfo who’s also a former Finance Minister during the esrtwhile Kufour Administration stated that the NPP Transition Team had a big problem with the employment last-minute employment that happened under the NDC government.

“We really didn’t want to shout over these things because we wanted a smooth transition, but naturally these things can be and should be reviewed…it is a matter of course. There’s a payroll for every department and every institution in this country, so if I’m appointed as the new Minister and you’re not on the payroll till December the day of the election, and you appear on the payroll for January…then when were you enagaged? You’re going to create a problem, the minister is likely to say that all those who were not on the payroll by a particular date, I’ll do away with their services…I can see that happening. If they’ve been engaged long ago and they were just resuming for whatever reason, they’ll be time to rationalize. If names appear on the payroll after December we’ll definately lay them off quietly.”
