For insulting Queenmother… Denkyira Traditional Council invokes great oat against MCE/DCE

The Denkyira Traditional Council in the Central Region has invoked the great oath of the area against the Municipal Chief Executive for Upper Denkyira East and the District Chief Executive of the Upper Denkyira West.

By this oath, all Denkyira indigenes are to sever ties with the two government appointees Emelia Ankomah and Ambrose Ashia respectively.

The two reportedly held a news conference recently where they hurled insults on the Queen mother of Denkyira Nana Ama Ayensua Saara III.

The bad blood between the two politicians and the Traditional Council started after the Queen Mother predicted victory for the presidential candidate of the new patriotic party, Nana Akufo Addo.

She endorsed Akufo Addo when he called on her at her palace on Friday, June 17, 2016.

“We are certain that this year, God will lift up Nana Akufo-Addo’s hand. We know that once Nana becomes President, he will never abandon the people of Denkyira. With one mind and heart we will support Nana Akufo-Addo and ask for God’s guidance,” she said.

The queen mother also decried the lack of development in Denkyira by the John Mahama-led government over the last 7 years, resulting in massive under-development, widespread poverty and high levels of youth unemployment in the area.

The neglect, she explained, is because of the perceived support the people of Denkyira have for the New Patriotic Party, and as such “we pray that God will make Nana Akufo-Addo victorious.”

The obvious sign of neglect of Denkyira by the Mahama government, the Queen Mother said, can be seen in the deplorable nature of the road network in the area.

But this comments by the Queen Mother drew sharp criticisms from both the MCE and DCE, Hon. Emelia Ankomah told in an interview with the media dared the Nana Ama Ayensua Saara to tell the world what ex President Kuffour did for the people of Denkyira in his 8 years rule. She said nothing meaningful was seen under the NPP rule, even though President Kuffour has his roots from the area.

She said the Queenmother has embarrassed herself by refusing to see the several projects being undertaken in the area by the Mahama –led Adminsitration.

However the comments by the MCE have angered the Denkyira Paramountcy that has invoked the great oath of the traditional area.

Acting President of the Denkyira Traditional Council and Chief of Denkyira Obuasi, Nana Adjei Nkyiriye II, addressing a news conference said by their actions they have badly dented the image of the Denkyira.

“We are telling all Ghanaians and people of Denkyira in particular that Hons. Emelia Ankomah and Ambrose Ashia have disgraced the Queenmother, the Traditional Council, Denkyira township and our gods and for doing this we invoke the great oath and we sever ties with them immediately.”

Police in the Upper West region say it will bring perpetrators who set ablaze the NDC party’s office in Wa West to book and prevent any partisan interest into its investigations.

Police have intensified their investigations to arrest some young men behind this lawless act  in the Wa West District.

The suspects on Saturday apart from burning the NDC office also destroyed a vehicle belonging to the party’ constituency chairman.

The angry youth were protesting against the President’s nomination of one Basiera Sankara as the District Chief Executive for the district.

But the Upper West Regional Police Commander, ACP Dr. Shaibu Gariba said the Police will deal with perpetrators involved according to the laws of the land.

“We’ve not made any arrest yet but we’re gathering intelligence to get to bring perpetrators to book. This is beyond party issue and we’ll make sure we deal with those involved according to law. They don’t have any right to destroy public properties because they are angry over some issue. We’ll not treat it as an NDC internal matter and we’ll not favour anyone because it is an NDC matter; crime has no political colours , hence once they are caught we’ll deal with them.”

We’ll facilitate NSS Traffic wardens entry into the Police Service – Kpessah Whyte

The National Service Scheme (NSS) has disclosed that it will facilitate the entry into the Ghana Police Service personnel of the National Service  who have served as traffic wardens and have applied to join the law enforcement body.

The Police Administration has said it will not give preferential treatment to this group of personnel as it prepares to make recruitment into the Service.

The police service said it is giving equal opportunity to all interested persons hence its decision to open the sale of its application vouchers to the public.

The deployment of National Service Personnel to direct road traffic in support of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Ghana Police Service started during the year 2013-2014.

The personnel who work alongside the police are given special training to enable them perform their duties efficiently. The initiative which forms part of the National Service Scheme’s long term strategic plan greatly reduces traffic congestion in major cities of the country.

The services offered by these personnel to the state has got many thinking that they’ll have automatic entry into the police service.

However, the Director of Public Affairs of the Police Service Superintendent Cephas Arthur insists that their collaboration with the police is no guarantee of their entry into the service.

“We are giving equal opportunity to everyone that is why even though we’ll not take too many personnel into service, we allowed anyone interested to buy the forms. It’s a struggle; whoever has a strong foot forward eventually gets access. In as much as they helped us work for a year, none will be given priority treatment; they are competing evenly with others.

“The only advantage any of them interested in being a police officer will have is when there’s a police exams to be written and because they have worked with the service they may have a better understanding and knowledge of police work. That is the edge they may have over the others.”

But speaking on TV 3 News Consumer Watch programme on Sunday, the Executive Director of the Scheme, Dr Kpessah Whyte stated that as an institution that made placement of the personnel interested into this particular module, it is fair to say that once they’ve applied it is quiet reasonable to put in a word for them so they could be employed.

“It will even be more cost effective for the Police Service because these individuals have been trained by the Police Service, they have socialized with the police, they have become ambassadors of the Police service. The Police service has said because of the efforts of these individuals we had lesser incidents of vehicular accidents during last year’s Christmas Yes! We’ll facilitate for them to be considered if we are allowed”

Supt. Arthur noted that life threatening situation the police officer was left with no option than to shoot the deceased in self defence which unfortunately led to the death of the suspected thief.

He added that the police will not shield Sergeant Karim Mohammed simply because he’s the bodyguard of the IGP even though initial investigation has established that his action was in self defence.

The Multimedia Broadcasting Company Limited, owners of Accra-based JOY FM has suspended its morning show host Kojo Yankson.

The suspension takes effect June 27 and it is without pay. Mr Yankson is expected back on air July 17.

The decision was reached by management as a punitive measure for what they say was his “conduct on the Super Morning Show on Thursday June 23, 2016 which was not in the best interest of the company – its reputation and audience.”

In a June 23 incident, Mr. Yankson is said to have attacked the person of Ghana’s president John Mahama in a manner that got him apologizing – subsequently.

In a Facebook post hours after the supposed gaffe, he said:

“This morning in the handover with Pastor Ato before the start of the Super Morning Show, I made a joke that has received some attention on social media.

“In referring to the recent media attention over the President riding a motorcycle, receiving a car, and owning a gun, I joked that armed robbers could also get media attention for similar reasons.

“Some Ghanaians have taken offence to this comment, and this is entirely my fault. As a communicator, I ought to understand that people react differently to information, and jokes about any divisive issue – even when told without malice – will not go down well with everyone.

“For this reason, I would like to apologise without reservation to any of our listeners – including the President himself – who may have found my joke distasteful. My comments were not aimed at offending any of you, and it makes me so sad that i have unintentionally done so.

“I would not be where I am today if I was incapable of learning from my mistakes, and this morning’s joke was a mistake. I have learnt from it. This experience will make me better, and that’s good for all of us.

“I will repeat this apology on air tomorrow morning at 05:50am, just before the start of the Super Morning Show.

“Thank you all for your tolerance and understanding.”

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has brushed off  claims on social media that the Circle interchange is on the verge of collapse.

Rumors have gone viral on social media Monday that the Circle interchange which is currently under construction by the Brazilian construction giant, Queiroz Galvão company, faces imminent collapse following alleged structural defects on the facility as some of the pillars have severe cracks and have also begun sinking.

However a statement by the Roads Ministry stated that the “project has undergone all the necessary structural integrity tests and has proven to be structurally sound.”

The statement added, “again the so-called cracks on the piers are untrue and that the piers erected for the projects are very strong, technically and physically.

“We wish to assure the general motoring public that the Kwame Nkrumah Circle interchange is very safe for use and does not pose any danger to its users.

“We appeal to the general public to desist from making unsubstantiated allegations that has the potential to create fear and panic to road users and rather seek necessary clarification from the relevant and appropriate quarters where they have concerns.

“We shall ensure that the Ghanaian taxpayer gets value for the investment made in the project.”

Police Service Won’t Block Social Media on Nov. 7th

The Ghana Police Service has clarified its position on the controversial consideration to ban social media on Election Day.

According to the Commnications Director of the Police, the ban was one of the alternatives under consideration but the Police will not shutdown social media on November 7, the day of Ghana’s general elections.

The Inspector General of Police, John Kudalor had earlier suggested that a social media blackout on November 7 was being considered as a way to  counter the activities of potential ‘troublemakers’ who might disrupt the election process using these platforms.

“At one stage I said that if it becomes critical on the eve and also on the election day, we shall block all social media as other countries have done. We’re thinking about it,” John Kudalor had said.

Speaking at Blogging Ghana’s Blog camp on Saturday, the Communications Director of the Police Service, Superintendent Cephas Arthur assured Ghanaians the IGP’s comments were on the spur of the moment and a social media ban was not being considered.

“The IGP used the word alternatives but it looks as if nobody heard the other alternatives that he mentioned because nobody is discussing that. This was not part of his speech. It was a kind of off the top of his head answer.

Let us not be alarmed. The IGP is not about to block social media on election day and we are going to have our social media,” Cephas Arthur said.

The IGP’s comments had generated widespread criticism from the general public who felt such an action would represent suppression of freedom of speech.

Several bodies including the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD), BloggingGhana, and  PenPlusBytes have criticised the Police Chief’s words describing the idea as ‘undemocratic.

Facebook and Twitter are Ghanaians two of the most popular social media platforms. Photo: NYTimes

The United Nations (UN) has also waded into the debate, stating that they would oppose any attempt to block social media ahead of the elections.

The special representative of the United Nations (UN) Secretary General for West Africa and the Sahel, Mohammed Ibn Chambas said: “I should say without hesitation that from a UN point of view, we would be obviously averse to any steps that will amount to restricting the democratic space, particularly any steps that will be taken to restrict the freedom of expression.”

Cephas Arthur admitted that the Service’s visibility in terms of the online space was negligible but added that steps had been taken to address the situation.

“If you went to our site, you’ll see some inactive social media outlets. We were present, somehow. With ICT advancements, the administration is putting measures in place to ensure that we are also strongly represented there. It’s something that we are working hard at and with the recent issue of abusing social media and having the likelihood of checking out information that could cause problems, the administration is doubling up and a lot is being done to permanently have a very strong presence on the social media front. So I can assure you that we are there, we are working hard and very soon you will see that we are strongly represented and it will be like that forever and we’ll keep on improving and changing with changing times,” he added.

The Project lead of Ghana Decides, Kinna Likimani, stated that her group is willing to “work with the police” to use social media to enhance their work as well as boost their visibility.

“The threat to our peace and social media freedom is real. We have to empower our security forces to handle social media. The sooner the better.” she added.

One of the Police chief’s major worries at the time was the likelihood that the activities of social media ‘bullies and trolls’ would intensify ahead of the polls in November.

However, IT expert Maximus Ametorgoh offered a solution to this, stating there was a way to track down potential social media hooligans.

“There are softwares which the police can use to find specific keywords on social media to track inciters,” he explained.

Ghana Decides also gave social media training to NGOs and other state agencies like the Electoral, Commission, Ghana Armed forces, Ghana News Agency and students from Ghana Institute of Journalism.

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to begin his “Accounting to the People” tour  of the Ashanti region today.

Mr. Mahama is expected to use the opportunity to inspect developmental projects in the region and also interact with the people.

He’s billed to inspect road networks at Asokore Mampong, and a newly built market facility at Asawasi among others today.

NPP will NOT condemn Ken Agyepong for attacking EC Boss – Karbo

Deputy Communications Director of the largest opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Anthony Abayifa Karbo has said the party will not condemn its eccentric Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Ken Agyepong for insisting that the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) Charlotte Osei was appointed in exchange for sex.

According to him, Ken Agyepong does not speak for the NPP and as such his comments does not represent the party’s position.

The foul-mouthed Legislator during the campaign launch of the Asokwa MP, Patricia Apeagyei on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the EC Boss alleging that she did not secure her position based on competence and merit.

Agyapong said some highly placed officials in government told Osei to “bring your buttocks in exchange of EC Chair position.”

He also said; ‘if indeed Nana Addo (the party’s running mate) wins according to the pink sheets and Charlotte Osei dares to rig the elections by twisting our arms in favour of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), we will not allow it to happen in Ghana.”

The maverick’s politician’s comment has been greeted with huge flak by a section of the public who believe the MP has debased womanhood with his unfortunate utterances and must be roundly condemned.

There have been calls on the NPP to public condemn the party financier but the “Elephant family” is yet to comment on the issue.

However speaking to Fiifi Banson on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM Tuesday, Anthony Karbo who’s also the Parliamentary Candidate for Lawra insisted that in as much as he opposes such attacks on women, he disagrees with such calls for the NPP to speak on the matter.

“I don’t think the party needs to come into this matter and I don’t think the party will go into this matter…the party shouldn’t. I don’t have evidence to what Ken is alleging, maybe he has. The media must call him and demand of him the evidence he has to his allegation. He may well be able to produce it.”

Karbo, noted that the ruling NDC must not be hypocritical on this matter as absolutely nothing was heard from the party when non NDC women supporters were attacked in such manner.

“When the NDC’s Halidu Haruna said unmarried women above 30 years are prostitutes the party was out there supporting him. When Ursula Owusu suffered verbal attacks no highly placed woman in government such as Gender Minister, Nana Oye Lithur said a word about that.”

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has overspent its budget by GH₵1,717,874.25.

Consequently, the amount was spent on the construction of the Ministry’s office building but the project has been abandoned.

This follows the failure of the Finance Ministry to release additional funding for the completion of the project.

The excess expenditure, according to the 2013 audited report of the Auditor-General, emanated from releases for capital expenditure of GH₵2,393,013.08 for the construction of the project.

According to the Auditor-General, the said amount was originally not included in the budget but the Ministry of Finance saw the need to support the Ministry’s office project and therefore released the money.

Nana Konadu did NOT pay Komla Dumor’s school fees

The Family of the late BBC Broadcaster Komla Dumor has dismissed an assertion by Ghana’s former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings that she single highhandedly paid the tuition fee of the former, when he schooled at the University of Ghana.

“I paid Komla Dumor’s fees at the university,” Konadu disclosed to Bola Ray on personality profile show Starr Chat on Wednesday.

But is a swift response Thursday, The Dumor family has stated emphatically that Mrs. Rawlings’ claim is “patently false.”

The family has disclosed that at the time the late the adorable Broadcaster was schooling, government had not introduced tuition fees. “By the time Student Fees were introduced, Komla had already graduated from the University of Ghana. He was therefore never in a position to be required to pay fees to begin with,” Korshie Dumor said in a statement on behalf of the Dumor Family.

Below is the full statement:

PRESS RELEASE – 30th June 2016
Academic Experience of the Late Komla Dumor of Blessed Memory

It has come to the attention of the Dumor Family that a statement has been made in public circles regarding my late brother Mr. Komla Dumor. As he is no longer here to respond for himself, we are compelled to set the record straight.

It has been suggested that Komla received assistance in paying his University fees. Let me state without any equivocation: This is patently false.

It is said that success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan. This is not the first time that we have seen some individuals lay claim to the success Komla achieved.

As a family we felt the shared pride that all Ghanaians felt with what Komla was able to do with the 41 years he was granted. After all they had contributed to the growth and development of Komla.

We cannot however sit idly by while falsehoods are peddled that fly in the face of basic verifiable facts.

The following points are easily confirmed as public information:
1. Cost sharing between the Government of Ghana 70% and three sources, University Internally Generated Funds, Private Donations, and Students Tuitions making up the remaining 30% were introduced into tertiary education in Ghana in 1997. Payment of Students Fees started in 1998.

2. Komla graduated from the University of Ghana with a BA in Psychology and Sociology in June 1998 with honours.

3. By the time Student Fees were introduced, Komla had already graduated from the University of Ghana. He was therefore never in a position to be required to pay fees to begin with.

4. By 1997 a year before graduating from University, Komla was the Lead Presenter of Joy Fm’s Super Morning Show and was earning a decent salary. Financially he recognized that he was privileged to be on a much more stable footing compared to many of his peers. He would therefore have no need to request assistance from anyone to cover costs associated with his time at the University of Ghana Legon.

5. In June 2003 Komla graduated from the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government in Boston, after receiving a full scholarship from The Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program. He finished as the Class Valedictorian.

It is clear that Komla required no additional financial assistance from any individual and should any need have arisen, he would have had the support of his parents to refer to. In that regard, it is interesting to note again that Komla did not emerge from a vacuum.

His father, Professor Ernest Dumor, a career educator and public servant dedicated his life to years of teaching and later working to entrench Ghana’s democratic institutions when its Electoral Commission was in its infancy. He later served as the founding Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority. Professor Dumor received a Ghana National Book Award in 1997 for his book on post apartheid South Africa’s road to democratic electoral systems.

Komla’s mother, the late Cecilia Dumor, edited every text book that was used when the Government of Ghana introduced its educational reform program and started the Senior Secondary School program. She personally read and edited over 50 books that were needed to get the program off the ground. This Herculean effort in 1998 earned her a Ghana National Book Award. She did all of this while suffering from a debilitating disease.

Although not rich and though eligible, Komla’s parents chose not to apply for available student loans as they felt they had the means to support their children through tertiary education. They also felt it to be part of their civic responsibility to pay their way so that students whose parents had fewer resources could access those loans.

It is well known that Komla’s maternal grandfather wrote Ghana’s National Anthem. His paternal grandfather spent his life establishing schools across the length and breath of the Volta Region during the Colonial era.

The traditions of dedication and service run deep in our family. Komla appreciated with pride those traditions he came to meet and did all he could to build upon them. As a family, we believe that by God’s Grace, they will persist for generations to come. Let no one seek to reap where they have not sown.

Let me end by reiterating the Dumor family’s gratitude for the support of the overwhelming majority of Ghanaians to genuinely respect Komla’s history and sustain his legacy.

The Berekusu Basic School is celebrating 130 years of existence after the Presbyterian Missionaries established it in 1886.

The school’s population currently stands at seven hundred and sixty-six (766) but lacks many amenities which makes one wonder if it is indeed 130 years old.

The headmistress of Berekusu Basic School, Margaret Woyuhintum speaking during the 130THAnniversary of the school said the school has no library and no computer lab.

She revealed further that the most unfortunate part is that the B stream has lessons under trees and canopies, adding that there is no teacher’s common room.

The Chief of Berekuso, Nana Oteng Korankye II during his speech at the event warned encroachers of Berekuso Basic School land to stop or face his wrath. He noted that the school land is for expansion and development for the pupils as well as the Secondary school yet to be built.

Nana Oteng Korankye said it is an honour for the town to have been able to maintain the school for such a long time.

He advised the pupils to take their studies seriously and get Scholarship from Ashesi University because it was unfortunate the indigenes are not taking advantage of the Scholarship scheme offered by the school.

The Member of Parliament for Akuapem South Constituency and former deputy Youth and Sports Minister, Osei Bonsu Amoah also called on parents and guardians to desist from purchasing material things and invest in their children.

He advised the pupils to take their education seriously since their future depends on it.

Mahama’s ‘e dey be k3k3’ lacks substance – Akufo-Addo

The 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has ridiculed President Mahama’s mantra ‘E dey be k3k3’, insisting that such campaign message lacks substance for Ghanaians.

“Mahama says we in the NPP have no message. His message of ‘e dey bee keke’ is one I will never put before the Ghanaian people. Is ‘e dey bee keke’ a message? What do you understand by ‘e dey bee keke’? If this is the kind of message he wants from the NPP, he will never get it,” the NPP flagbearer said.

He said unlike the NDC, his message for this year’s election is on job creation, which he claimed hinges on the industrialization of the Ghanaian economy and the modernization of agric.

According to Nana Akufo-Addo, the claim by President Mahama that the NPP has no message is laughable, because the party, since 2008, has remained consistent on the message of industrializing Ghana’s economy.

He continued: “Our message is about bringing jobs to the people of Ghana – reviving our economy, and improving and diversifying our agriculture. That is the business we are coming to do (when the NPP wins this year’s elections).”

Nana Akufo-Addo made this known whilst addressing a gathering at the Asesewa market, in the Upper Manya constituency, on Friday, July 1, 2016, at the commencement of day 3 of his 5-day tour of the Eastern Region.

Reiterating his pledge of setting up one factory in every district, he indicated that the Upper Manya constituency has a good number of raw materials, including maize, cassava, rice and oil palm, which will make the setting up of a factory in the district profitable.

The NPP flagbearer added that, in addition to the establishment of a marketing board for maize, his government “is going to diversify our agriculture. We are not going to rely only on cocoa. We are going to follow the steps of Cote d’Ivoire, where their government is fully supporting the production of cotton, coffee, cashew and oil palm, in addition to cocoa.”

This twin-track of rapid industrial expansion and increasing agricultural productivity, he noted, is the means by which his government, God-willing from 2017, is going to create jobs for the teeming masses of unemployed Ghanaians.

Nana Akufo-Addo, thus, urged residents of Asesewa and the people of Upper Manya not to be swayed by the usual “skeptic talk” of “it cannot be done” and “it is impossible” any time he outlines policies and programmes aimed at bringing progress and prosperity to Ghanaians.

“It was the same thing they said when we wanted to introduce the National Health Insurance Scheme, Free SHS and the Northern Development Authority. Today, they have turned around and are trying to implement these policies. We are coming into office to fully implement these policies as we originally planned,” he noted.

He further stated that “it is the skeptics who have no faith in the ability of the Ghanaian to shape a prosperous future who say ‘it cannot be done’. But, we believe strongly in the can-do-spirit of the Ghanaian.”

To the Zongo community in Asesewa, he assured them of the setting up of a Zongo Development Fund, aimed at enhancing infrastructural development in Zongo communities and improving the lives of their residents.

Support me
Nana Akufo-Addo, therefore, appealed to the residents of Asesewa and Upper Manya to support and vote for him, “so we can come and change Ghana”, and give the young men and women of Ghana hope.

“We have to give hope to our young people that Ghana can give them a good life, and be a country where they can be dignified citizens. That is the task I have put on myself to do for the progress of our country,” he said.

He continued, “We are coming to root out the wanton theft of our public resources and the widespread cases of corruption in our governance system. I did not come into politics to steal the monies of poor Ghanaians. That’s not why I am into politics. I did not also come into politics to take bribes. I am into politics because I want to use the little wisdom and knowledge God has given me to help move Ghana forward, and bring relief and wealth to every part of the country.”

With the Upper Manya constituency being one of the six constituencies the NPP has never won in the Eastern Region, in the 4th Republic dispensation, Nana Akufo-Addo appealed to residents to “try me and the NPP, because we are coming to change Ghana. I have come to ask for your support. I want you to try the NPP and myself, and I will not disappoint you. I promise you that.”

He also urged residents to vote for the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for the constituency, Joseph Tetteh, a.k.a, ‘Joe Tee’, stressing that “it is when you vote for Nana and Joe Tee that Asesewa and Upper Manya are going to grow and grow.”

Nana Akufo-Addo rounded off his tour of the constituency with a visit to Sekesua, where he assured the Dademantsemei, Manyemei and the people of Sekesua that his government will fix the deplorable nature of the road leading into the town, as well as extend potable drinking water to the community.
