Voters register exhibition exercise not likely to be extended – EC

Persons who failed to verify their names in the voters register during the just ended voters register exhibition exercise will likely not have another opportunity as the Electoral Commission has hinted there will not be an extension of closing date.

The three-weeks exercise which ended Sunday was characterized by apathy which translated into low turnout in many polling stations across the country.

It was to afford potential voters in the upcoming 2016 elections the opportunity to verify their names and help clean the register.

The Director of Communications at the Electoral Commission (EC) Eric  Dzakpasu who confirmed the low turnout stated that the electoral management body will do an assessments of the figures drawn from the exercise to ensure that the Commission has a better understanding of what transpired during the exhibition exhibition.

Mr Dzakpasu noted that in spite of the low turn out, the EC is not likely to add more days to allow more people to verify their names.

“Over the years this exercise has always been a ten or fourteen days exercise. But this time round because we wanted massive involvement so that we can put everything right in terms of the register, we’ve already built in the extension making it 21 days and looking at the response I don’t foresee the possibility of an extension.  But as I indicated we’ll have to wait for a while to get the necessary field data and respond that issue.”

A former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Professor Stephen Adei has criticized President John Dramani Mahama of appointing people from his area of origin into public offices.

He said per his research findings, one out of every four of the President’s appointments come from his area of origin.

“One of the things going on which is totally unacceptable is about why one out of every four public sector appointment comes from the President’s area of origin.

“That is totally unacceptable because we are a unified country, we are a country whereby if you take any major group, whether Gas, Ashantis or Ewes you can form a cabinet from it,” the former GIMPA boss told the gathering during the Prempeh Colleges’ Pearson Osae lectures in Accra.

Commenting on the Free SHS project, Prof. Adei said the initiative is good albeit some concerns.

According to him, it must be reconsidered to enable the beneficiary communities enjoy it fully.

“…You can’t build day schools in the village without teachers’ accommodation. You need smaller secondary schools with laboratories, teachers bungalows among others”.

The Accra Psychiatric Hospital will not admit new patients until the  GHC 1.6m promised by government hits the hospital’s account, Authorities of the Mental Health service facility has said.

Government last week announced it has released an amount of GHC 1.6m which is expected to hit the account of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital by Monday (yesterday) to settle the debt owed by the mental health service facility.

The hospital last week suspended admission of patients into the facility due to the crippling debt. It warned that the hospital was likely to experience food shortage in the coming days due to the unavailability of funds to restock.

The decision was taken following several failed attempts by management of the facility to get government to meet its budgetary obligation for more than three years.

The hospital is Ghana’s premier facility for persons with psychiatric and mental disorders among other related health complications.

Ministry of Health, Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health, Tony Goodman believes the said amount will clear the GHC 1.2m debt the hospital owes its suppliers and will also help in its effective running.

The Medical Director of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Dr Pinamang Apau in an interview with Joy News stated that in as much as the facility has assurance from government to settle its debt, it will not run ahead of itself to admit new patients.

“We are still in the same situation that we’ve been talking about for the past month. Now if I admit a patient to the hospital it becomes my responsibility and I have to feed them. As at now, it is becoming more and more difficult; over the weekend it was that bad and so if I go ahead and admit it is going to become a burden.”

REVEALED: I am now an NDC member – Oye Lithur

Gender and Social protection minister, Nana Oye Lithur, has revealed that she is now a member of the ruling government NDC.

Supporters of the NDC chastised the president for appointing a Non-Party member as a sector minister but President Mahama noted the appointment of Nana Oye Lithur was based purely on her competence and experience.

The Ministry was created to coordinate and better implement social intervention programs aimed as safety nets for the poor and vulnerable in our society and to compile a database and track the effect of government’s social intervention programs on these segments of our society.

Nana Oye in her work as a lawyer and with the Commonwealth Human Rights Institute (CHRI) has vast expertise in working with this sector of the society and expected by many to stay out of politics and concentrate on her ministerial job.

But in an exclusive interview with Kasapa 102.5 FM’s Maame Broni, Nana Oye revealed that she has now joined the NDC and ready to do active politics and campaigning for the party to win the 2016 elections.

‘I’m part of NDC now. I was not part of the NDC when I was appointed as a minister. Everything is making me part of the NDC now. The social democratic principles, the leadership in president Mahama, the social development agenda, the people oriented agenda and the team, that is what has made me become a part of the NDC.’ She told Maame Broni.

According to her, she will continue to be a human rights activist but her decision has been influenced by her being part of the John Mahama led Administration which is borne out of a political Party NDC.

Mrs. Oye Lithur is married to Mr. Tony Lithur, the President’s Lawyer.

Montie 3 Petition: “Decent Council of State members will not advice a pardon”– IMANI

The President of policy think-thank IMANI Center for Policy and Education, Franklin Coudjoe, has said he’ll be utterly shocked if the Council of State advices President John Mahama to pardon the jailed Montie trio, who have been sentenced by the Supreme Court to four months imprisonment.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has, on behalf of President JD Mahama, presented to the Council of State petitions received in respect of the incarceration of three (3) persons for contempt of court.

The petitions were received from lawyers of the jailed Montie Presenter, Salifu Maase, and his two guests, Ako Gunn and Alistair Nelson who have been jailed for four months by the Supreme Court, and a Civil Society Group, Research & Advocacy Platform.

The trio had threatened the lives of the Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood and other judges who were sitting over a case in relation to the voters register, if they went ahead to rule on the matter in a way that will be disadvantageous to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). They were also fined GHC 10,000 each of which failure to pay would have attracted an additional one month jail term.

Presenting the petitions to the Chairperson of the Council, Madam Cecilia Johnson, Mr. Debrah said the President is looking forward to the advice of the Council.

The Chairperson announced that the petitions will be submitted to the Legal Committee of the Council for initial review before the Council as a whole meets to consider the issues.

But speaking on Okay FM Tuesday, Franklin Coudjoe stated that President John Mahama will lose the upcoming general election if he should grant the Montie trio whom he (Franklin) describes as treacherous and wicked people.

“It was very surprised to see these people some of whom have been educated with the poor tax payers money go to sign such a petition; Ghana becomes a joke with such actions. In any case, the President knows that all the people who went signing the petition are not serious, but he has to listen to them because in politics you have to give an ear to all shades of opinions, the President knowing this is an election is not able to order for the release of the trio. If he dares release those, treacherous, wicked people, he will lose the election immediately. The President is right in forwarding the petition to the Council of State, but I know the Council is made up of decent human beings, well educated…they will never grant any pardon.”

Minister of Communications, Dr Edward Omane Boamah has rejected warnings that President John Mahama’s will cause his own ‘political death’ if he agrees to a request to grant pardon to the jailed trio in the Montie 3 saga.

Salifu Maase aka Mugabe, a presenter on NDC affiliated radio station Montie FM and two panelists Alistair Nelson and Godwin Ako Gunn, who recently appeared on the Pampaso show, were found guilty of scandalizing the court, defying and lowering the authority of the Supreme Court and bringing it into disrepute.

The two on June 29, warned judges of Ghana’s highest court to be wary of their conduct in the case involving the Electoral Commission and Mr Abu Ramadan if they did not want to suffer the fate of the three members of the bench who were shot to death and burnt on June 30, 1982 in the era of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC).

The Supreme Court a fortnight ago handed a four months jail term each to the three men. They were additionally fined GHC 10,000 each.

The NDC has described the sentencing as harsh with party supporters mounting pressure on leaders of the party and President John Mahama to use his executive powers as enshrined in Article 72 of the constitution to grant the three jailed persons pardon.

Supporters of the NDC who believe the sentencing is harsh have mounted pressure on President John Mahama to use his executive powers as enshrined in Article 72 of the constitution to grant the three jailed persons pardon.

A petition book opened to gather signatures to be presented to President Mahama seeking pardon for the trio has been signed by leading members of the NDC including ministers of state, which currently being studied by the Council of State for advice after President Mahama forwarded it to the Council.

The Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) on the other hand is also gathering signatures to counter the petition by the NDC.

Some politicians and social commentators including Kweku Baako Jnr, Lawyer Sam Okudzeto and CPP Flagbearer Ivor Greenstreet have cautioned President Mahama against granting the pardon arguing that the President will be causing his ‘political death’ if he should accede to the request.

But speaking to Paul Adom Ochere on Good Evening Ghana on Metro TV Tuesday night Dr Omane Boamah dismissed any such caution to the President.

“That is to say that if the President acted according to law it is inimical to his political career, President Mahama’s political career, by the grace of God with the support of the sovereign people of Ghana as president will be terminated on January 6th 20121.”

Charlotte Osei’s sex for job comment was a JOKE – Ken Agyepong

“..I said a lot of things on that day, even this one, I was joking, I immediately took my seat after making those comments…yes, I was joking.

“There is an element of hypocrisy in this country. Nana Oye Lithur was orgainising and paying persons GHC20 to go and demonstrate against me because I have made comments against Charlotte Osei.

“I have nothing against Charlotte if and only if she would be fair to Ghanaians.”

  • Mr. Agyepong was speaking on Accra-based Adom fm.

Background

Controversial MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyepong, has warned his critics not to dare him to expose the moral side of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Charlotte Osei, else the information he will churn out will not be palatable to consume.

According to the NPP firebrand, he has gathered so much information about the EC boss that he wouldn’t want to go public again with his findings.

He stressed that what he has already shared with the public when he mounted the political platform in Atonsu, Kumasi, on Sunday, is a summary of his findings.

The maverick foul mouthed legislator during the campaign launch of the Asokwa MP, Patricia Appiagyei, launched a scathing attack on the EC boss alleging that she did not secure her position based on competence and merit.

Agyapong said some highly placed officials in government told Charolotte Osei to “bring your buttocks in exchange of EC Chair position”.

He also said; ‘if indeed Nana Addo (the NPP’s flagbearer) wins according to the pink sheets and Charlotte Osei dares to rig the elections by twisting our arms in favour of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), we will not allow it to happen in Ghana.”

His comments have received widespread condemnation by a cross section of the public, especially, from women groups and individuals who believe that the Assin Central MP has debased womanhood with his unfortunate utterance.

Some have questioned his basis for making such claims and have demanded that he substantiates his allegation or retract and apologize unreservedly.

But the MP responding to his critics on ‘Boiling Point’ on Accra based Oman FM, Tuesday, said he does not comment on things he has no knowledge or information about.

“I am not the kind of person who will be pushed by what they (his critics). They should bring it on. I won’t apologize today and I won’t apologize tomorrow. If they dare me, what I will release to the public will shock everyone”, he noted.

He added “Parliament failed in scrutinizing the woman (Charlotte Osei) well. They should have done a thorough background checks not only about her academic qualification but also her moral life”.

A young man only known as Owuraku, a resident of Akyem Kyia in the Eastern Region met his untimely death when he was involved in an accident on Monday.

His death was a prize he paid for having sex with a 13 year old girl, Afia Dede, who has been placed under a curse by her own mother.

The teenager’s mother sought the services of a powerful fetish priest in the area, Nana Boame to place a curse on her daughter whom a lot of young men in the town had taken advantage of and had  had sex with.

Afia Dede’s mother has vowed to protect her youngest daughter who’s dear to her heart through any means possible and ensure she goes far with her education, since her three other daughters have been ‘used’, messed up and dumped by irresponsible men.

When residents especially the young men in the town heard reasons for Owuraku’s death, they stormed the residence of the fetish priest to attack him.

However an eye witness, Apenteng Tenkorang, told Kasapa News that upon besieging the fetish priest’s residence and before they could say jack, Nana Boame, the Fetish priest started charming the guys following which the rest of the angry crowd took to their heels.

The incensed youth then turned their anger on the woman and her daughter and went straight to their house to attack them, but they got wind of the attack ahead of time and fled to the fetish priest’s ‘fortified’ house where they’ve been seeking refuge for the past 48 hours.

I endorse NPP’s ‘1-Factory-1-District’ policy – Chief

Ogyeahorhuor Kwaku Gyebi II, the Chief of the Anhwiaso Traditional Area, in the Bibiani Anhwiaso constituency, in the Western Region, has endorsed the “1-District-1-Factory” policy of the 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

According to the Chief, this policy is one sure way of creating the hundreds of thousands of jobs required by the teeming masses of unemployed Ghanaian youth across the country.

“We have heard you say that in every district your government will help establish one factory. As usual, we have heard the naysayers and doubters saying it cannot be done. I am not a politician, but I vividly recollect that our grandmothers used to make soap out of plantain husks and cocoa pods.

“Even if Nana Akufo-Addo does not build a cocoa processing factory here in Anhwiaso, but says he will set up a soap making factory, for example, it is clearly doable. The ‘1-District-1-Factory’ policy is one I wholly endorse. We, in Anhwaiso, know that once you have said you will do it, it will be done,” he said.

Ogyeahorhuor Kwaku Gyebi II made this known when Nana Akufo-Addo, in the company of NPP national and regional stalwarts, paid a courtesy call on him at his palace, at the commencement of his 5-day tour of the Western Region.

Bemoaning the high levels of unemployment in Anhwiaso and in the country, with tertiary institutions, according to the Anhwiaso Chief, producing some 60,000 to 80,000 graduates annually, Ogyeahorhuor Kwaku Gyebi II wondered how many of such graduates will get jobs to do if drastic policy measures, like the ‘1-District-1-Factory’, are not implemented.

“That is why some of us have expressed our confidence and belief in you. As you (Nana Akufo-Addo) have said, once agriculture is diversified, and factories established, thousands of jobs will be created across the country,” he added.

Falling Standards of education

The Anhwiaso Chief also bemoaned the falling standards of education under the President Mahama government, with particular reference to the recently published results of candidates who sat in this year’s West Africa Senior Secondary Examination.

Saddened by the results, which saw only 53% of students recording passes in English; 48.5% passes in Integrated Science; and 32.8% passes in Core Mathematics, the Chief wondered “if these are the kinds of results being churned out as a nation, how then can we develop?”

To this end, he urged the NPP flagbearer to take a second look at the duration students spend in school, and reverse it to the 4-years originally introduced by President Kufuor. He, however, stated that if the 3-year duration will be maintained, then all senior high schools must be fitted with the requisite learning facilities to help improve the grades of students.

Ogyeahorhuor Kwaku Gyebi II was confident that, under Akufo-Addo government, “the Free SHS policy will be truly implemented”.

To this end, he appealed to the NPP flagbearer to come to the aid of the Anhwiaso Senior High School, a project he undertook on his own.

“Government, in the last two years, has taken over the school. However, till date the students have nowhere to lay their head. On our own, again, we have started the construction of a dormitory and a science laboratory. Kindly assist us finish this school when you win,” the Chief appealed

On the deplorable nature of the town roads in Anhwiaso, which the Chief said had been the subject of several petitions to government, he was confident that “when Nana wins the elections, he will make sure this is done”.

I’ve never been NDC Parliamentary candidate – EC Boss

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) Charlotte Osei has dismissed rumours that she once contested as a Parliamentary Candidate for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

There have been allegations that the EC Boss, stood as the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Evalue Gwira constituency in the 2008 election.

A campaign poster with a lady’s picture who Mrs Osei’s accusers claim is her and bearing the name Charlotte Kesson-Smith {which is the EC Boss name} recently went viral on social media platforms with those who published it claiming it was a confirmation that she was indeed biased towards the NDC party.

She has come under severe attacks mainly from the largest opposition who claim by her actions and inaction she’s showing that she is bed with the ruling party.

But speaking to Paul Adom Otchere on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana Thursday, Mrs Osei stated that she has never been a member of any political party, and has never contested a parliamentary election.

“Criticisms by themselves are not bad, for all f us we need criticisms to improve upon whatever we are doing, the problem is with unfounded allegations…comments that are without basis, some are malicious and mischievous. So if you put for instance that I have ran for office as a member of parliament (on the ticket of NDC), when I’ve never been a member of a political party then that is troubling because you are seeking to attack the credibility of the institution.”

I can’t rig elections alone – EC boss

The chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei has said it will be practically impossible for an individual to rig the upcoming December elections.

According to her, it will take the efforts of over 500,000 like minded people to skew the election in favour of one Presidential candidate and has therefore downplayed assertions by a section of the general public that she can solely decide the outcome of the elections.

Mrs Osei has come under heavy attack especially from a section of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have claimed that by her actions and inaction she is in bed with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and intends to rig the 2o16 elections in favour of President John Mahama.

But speaking to Paul Adom Otchere on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana show Thursday, the EC Boss was confident that the systems and the reforms that have been put in place, require the entire personnel of the electoral management body, including district officers and her other six commissioners to rig an election for a particular candidate.

She pledged her commitment to be fair referee in during the elections to ensure a credible outcome that will be acceptable to all politica parties and Ghanaians in general, adding that it doesn’t form part of her value system to rig an election.

“I think we should have a process that no matter how malevolent Charlotte Osei wants to be she should not be able to rig the elections and that is exactly the kind of process we have. we have a credible process, but we have a high level of mistrust and we tend to focus on persons. and so Charlotte Osei has been appointed and she’s coming to install a president but it is not just possible under system.

She added: “For Charlotte Osei to do that she has to get the support and active involvement of her other commissioners, ten regional directors, 200 plus district electoral officers, 275 Returning officers and their two assistants. and when we get to the polling station…for this elections there will be 145,000 people working at the polling stations, Charlotte Osei has to make all these people decide to tow one line. and then you are likely to have over 500,000 agents for candidates and parties. all these people must actively be working and changing documents for Charlotte Osei to rig the elections. I need to convince 500,000 plus people to skew the system in favour of one person, I haven’t figured how to do that yet and it’s not even part of my value system.”

Akufo-Addo announces future creation of Western-North Region

The 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has indicated that his government will create the ‘Western-North’ Region during his tenure of office.

According to Nana Akufo-Addo, the creation of the “Western-North” region is long overdue, considering the fact that “a significant proportion of Ghana’s natural resources, such gold and cocoa, as well as food stuff” can be found in that part of the country.

Additionally, the NPP flagbearer noted that the creation of the region is to ensure a more equitable development of the region, as well as address the unwieldy size of the Western Region.

The general consensus amongst the people of Western Region is for the creation of a separate region to allow for a more efficient governance system.

“It is, thus, about time the ‘Western-North’ became its own separate, independent region. We are going to do that in Nana Akufo-Addo’s government. The constitution (Article 5) has created ways by which this can happen, and we will go through the prescribed methods towards achieving this,” he said.

The NPP flagbearer made this known, on Thursday, at Amoaya in the Bodi constituency, on day 2 of his 5-day tour of the Western Region.

It is expected that the ‘Western-North’ Region will have the Sefwi, Juaboso, Bodi, Bia and Bibiani areas as the borders of this new region.
