The Electoral Commission has suspended indefinitely the ongoing transfer of votes exercise at Asunafo South in the Brong Ahafo Region, following violence in the area.

The EC’s decision follows destruction to its equipment last week by unidentified persons who also vandalized properties at offices of the District Assembly, Health Directorate and Social Welfare.

There was chaos in parts of the constituency when supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress attacked a group of supporters of the largest opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) who had queued to have their votes transferred.

The incident left the driver of the NPP Parliamentary candidate, a former Constituency Chairman, Osei Bonsu  and three others injured.

Equipment crucial to the success of the transfer of votes exercise such as server for storing data, satellite and other digital systems have all been destroyed.

According to the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Electoral Commission, Yusif Ayuba, the EC cannot immediately state when the conduct of the exercise will resume in the constituency.

“I’m not sure what modalities have been put in place, a report has been made to the Commission, the Commission will study the report and based on it, the commission will make a recommendation as to what next action or step we should take. An alternative provision will be made for persons who genuinely want to transfer their votes within the period that is stipulated for them to do so.”

The Electoral Commission started accepting applications for transfer of votes from one constituency to another on Friday 9th September 2016. The exercise is expected to end on Friday, 7th October 2016.

The Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) has filed a suit against the Electoral Commission over the filing fees being charged Presidential and Parliamentary candidates willing to contest in the upcoming December 7 elections.

The suit which was filed at the Accra High Court Monday cited the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General as a co-defendant.

The PPP is seeking five reliefs which include;

(a) A declaration that the Presidential and Parliamentary Filing Fees and or Deposits as announced by the 1st Defendant on September 8, 2016, for the conduct of the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections 2016 in the Republic of Ghana is arbitrary, capricious and unreasonable.

(b) A declaration that regulation 45 of C.I.94 is discriminatory, arbitrary, capricious and unreasonable.

(c) A declaration that the entire C.I.94 does not contain the appropriate relevant provisions that meet the intendment of article 296 of the 1992 Constitution.

(d) A declaration that the proper instrument within the meaning of the relevant laws of the Republic of Ghana in charging a deposit and or fees for conducting a Presidential and Parliamentary Elections by Electoral Commission is a statutory instrument and not constitutional instrument.

(e) An order that at the Defendants to desist from collecting and or receiving the said deposit or fees for the conduct of the 2016 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections until the appropriate statutory instruments have been passed in accordance with an appropriate legal regime.

The Electoral Commission’s decision to peg the filing fee for Presidential nominees at GHc50,000 and parliamentary aspirants at GHc10,000 was met with harsh criticisms from the various political parties.

During the 2012 elections, the nomination fee for parliamentary candidates was GH¢1,000 and GH¢10,000 for presidential candidates.

The PPP, Convention Peoples Party (CPP), Peoples National Convention (PNC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) described the fees as exorbitant and unfair.

We’re not lifting ban on Sanja Nanja anytime soon – Atebubu Traditional Council

With three months to go to the crucial polls, Hon. Nanja, many political watchers say is bound to face difficulty campaigning in the constituency since the Traditional Council and other local groups including the Zongo Association have all washed their hands off him and have banned him from engaging in any social activities in the area.

The Atebubu Traditional Council in April 2016, banned the MP after insulting the queenmother of the town, Nana Afia Donyina, on radio calling her a drunkard after she accused him of being behind disturbances in the area.

The council was of the view that hon. Sanja Nanja had disrespected the Queenmother and the Traditional Council by extension and as a result had to exact punishment against him.

The council further sacrificed a ram informing the gods of the town of the MPs disrespect to them, an act that was seen by many as a strong demonstration of the council anger.

Few weeks later, another paramountcy in the area, Amantin Traditional Council led by the paramount Chief, Nana Owusu Ababio II, also announced that he and his elders had also banned their legislator over the insults.

The beleaguered MP has found several ways of trying to win back the hearts of his constituents and the Atebubu Traditional Council including a GHC 20,000 compensation to the chiefs which they rejected.

In an interview, Spokesperson of the Atebubu Traditional Council, Nana Owusu Sarpong stated that the Council at its meeting on Sunday decided not to lift the ban even as the election approaches.

“Sanja Nanja has not learnt any lessons from the ban. We’ve informed all the various groups such as Muslims, Christian and youth leaders not to engage him  in any activity in the area. After asking the president of the Brong Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, who’s also the paramount Chief  of Yeji Traditional area to plead on his behalf, Sanja was heard speaking on radio claiming he didn’t ask the chief to do any such thing. This height of disrespect cannot be countenanced.”

The Traditional Council has asked the ruling NDC and President John Mahama, to replace him with another candidate to contest the election, as they have out-rightly rejected him.

Akufo Addo was a masterbrain while in Parliament – Adom Otchere

$

Host of Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana show, Paul Adom-Otchere has described the Flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo Addo as a ‘masterbrain’ in Parliament when he was a member of the House.

According to the Communications Consultant and Broadcast Journalist, the brilliant delivery of the three-time Presidential candidate especially regarding constitutional and legal matters during Parliamentary proceedings was a delight to watch and listen and also crucial to the course of the NPP.

The eloquent and articulate Nana Akufo Addo served as the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South for 12 years, exiting the Legislature in 2008 to pursue his Presidential ambitions.

Serving as the Minority Spokesperson on Constitutional and Legal Affairs in Parliament, Nana Akufo Addo was always heard making strong arguments on matter relating to the supreme law of the land and its rightful application.

Speaking to Bola Ray on Starr Chat on Starr 103.5FM, Wednesday, Mr. Adom-Otchere who said he was inspired by Akufo Addo to study law recountered one of the instances in Parliament where the latter showed his exploits much to the amazement of the House.

“On this occasion Hackman Owusu Agyeman had brought a motion about the Abacha bribe which became news recently, and Hackman had asked the Speaker that the Parliament should discuss the matter and see whether they will form a committee to investigate the situation. The speaker had told Hackman that this is a newspaper allegation and he did not expect Parliament to discuss and form committees matters that newspapers had raised. The Speaker’s view sounded like a very sound view and Hackman was bastardized by the NDC and he was in very bad shape on the floor of Parliament. This was one of the few occasions that we had seen the Minority being bastardized by the Majority on intellectual point.”

He added: “So then Akufo Addo raises his hand that he had something to say, the whole Parliament went quiet because we were all wondering what he was going to say, we knew that he was a very brilliant MP but we thought this was a bad case and we didn’t know how he was going to help this one. So speaker said, tell us…what do you have to say, and then he started by saying that the matter before the House was not whether to discuss Rawlings/ Abacha bribe nor whether or not a newspaper article should be discussed or not by Parliament. By this time he had gooten everybody confused, so the Majority started shouting at him asking so what is the matter before the House and he said, it is about the Speaker, and then Justice Annan said me…Akufo Addo said yes. It is about your conduct. You are not an elected member of the House, you can’t participate in the decision as to what we should discuss or not discuss, but here you are actively participating in the decision so you are the problem. Speaker nodded and said I understand…MPs cast your votes and let’s see if the matter should be discussed or not. Of course everyone knows that the Minority walked out on the vote. That day I was impressed with the man.”

“Nana Akufo Addo was a master-brain and I think J.H Mensah relied on him significantly. I fell in love with him so much that almost every afternoon I’ll go to his Nima office, and he’ll be in the office and I just looked at the way he conducted his office affairs and of course I’ll get an exclusive for Joy FM. That was my inspiration to study law. I terribly fell in love with the man.”

He also described the Second Parliament of the Fourth Republic as the best in recent times which had Justice D.F Annan as the Speaker, J.H Owusu Acheampong as the Majority Leader and J.H Mensah as the Minority Leader.

About 25% of respondents sampled in a Policy Think Tank, IMANI Ghana’s pre-election survey conducted across the country, want next government to discontinue the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) initiative.

A total of 10,020 respondents drawn from all the ten regions in Ghana were sampled for the survey.

The survey which looks primarily at the priority areas for Ghanaians as the nation heads into the parliamentary and presidential elections also concluded that 7% of Ghanaians also want the Livelihood Empowerment social intervention program scrapped by the next government.

Giving highlights of the survey, IMANI Senior Research Fellow, Selorm Branttie told the media in Accra that the survey also delved into matters of education, agriculture, health care, unemployment and the economy.

‘On social interventions, we asked the respondents on what they will want the next government to discontinue and SADA, GYEEDA, LEAP topped in the polls’, Brantie said.

Majority of Ghanaians who will be voting in the December 7 polls, want the next government to retrieve state monies lost in acts of corruption, a pre-election survey by IMANI Africa has revealed.

“…If you look at very important actionable, priority and message, it is interesting to see that more than 50% of virtually everybody in any of the regions we spoke to, want the next government to retrieve resources that have been lost. And so we have to juxtapose this result to the fact that we have cases where we are not sure whether the resources have been refunded to the state.

“To pre-tertiary education and cost priorities and necessities, we will be going over 90% of respondents across the board who would want to see cost of education reduced. LEAP for example…nearly 7.72% of the people we sampled want the LEAP program scrapped off,” Stevenson explained.

The survey dubbed: “Aligning the visions and promises of political parties with the challenges and problems of the Ghanaian voter” is also intended to heighten the interest of voters’ on critical issues that affect the nation.

IGP to be dragged to Parliament

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) John Kudalor, is to be hauled before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament soon, the Deputy Ranking member of the Committee, George Loh has disclosed.

The IGP  when he appears before the House will be answering questions over the prolonged investigations by the Police Service after the PAC directed it to prosecute persons who have been indicted by the Auditor-General’s Report.

Hon. Loh made the disclosure while contributing to a discussion on Joy FM’s Ghana Connect programme which discussed a report by policy think-thank IMANI Ghana which reveals that about GHC 5 billion, have been lost over three due to financial irregularities in the public sector according to the Auditor General’s Report.

He expressed displeasure over the inability of the police to speedily investigate people who are found to have engaged in criminality.

“Even when we have been able to decide that this is criminal and we hand these people over to the police, or the police have come for them…there are some cases 11 years they say they are still investigating. So these all give fodder to people in the system to do all sort of things. We’ve even planned…but I think we’ve not done the IGP yet, but we want to haul him before the PAC to come and explain. Because you stay the night and go through reports and you are able to identify some people who have done something real wrong and invite the police or you ask that they are reported to the police and for 11 years nothing gets done.”

Govt DISHONEST in taking credit for constructing Maritime hospital – Baako

The Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide Newspaper, Kweku Baako Jnr has accused the Mahama-led government of dishonestly taking credit for the construction of the International Maritime Hospital at Tema.

According to him, government cannot claim it built the 130 state-of-the-art bed hospital when the project was fully funded with internally generated funds of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority.

The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has captured the edifice in its 2016 Manifesto as one of its achievements in the health sector, claiming it constructed the health facility.

The 28 million US dollar enormous hospital, sits at Community Three, and the facility has a 1000kva power plant, an oxygen plant, theatres and laboratories, morgue and with a helipad. IMAH is positioned to fly out emergency cases or receive emergency cases by air.

Speaking on Joy FM’s News File show Saturday, Kweku Baako Jnr slammed the government for dishonestly appropriating something it did not contribute to achieving.

“There is a certain streak of dishonesty or if you like an overkill of dishonesty. They should have stated it well…government has encouraged some institutions of state to become financially independent so that they can move into construction of certain things, …precision, accuracy fairness but this attempt to politically appropriate the initiatives of some state organizations is difficult for me to take, it’s because of the political capitalization, the NDC is seeking electoral capital. This is not a government sponsored programme.”

Days after Ghanaian actor, Alex Kofi Adu popularly known as Agya Koo openly declared his support for the Presidential Candidate for the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, he has come under heavy castigation by a section of the public.

In an interview with host of Kasapa Entertainment on Kasapa 102.5FM, Kojo Preko Dankwa, the award-winning actor’s former communication strategist, Isaac Rockson made certain allegations claiming Agya Koo’s endorsement of the NPP’s Flagbearer was spearheaded by the Asante Regional Chairman of the party, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako also known as Chairman Wontumi.

“If Agya Koo says he hasn’t taken any money, he’s lying. Aya Koo has been paid and given an office by Chairman Wontumi and he’s being pushed to say all the things he’s saying.

“He’s gotten many properties from this…. if he says he hasn’t gotten anything from this endorsement, then I will tell him he has been very stupid.”

According to his former spokesperson, the day that he (Agya Koo) made the declaration to support the New Patriotic Party’s Flagbearer a decision was reached and he (Agya Koo) was advised thoroughly to re-evaluate his decision of his support for Nana Addo since he is still in talks with the President (John Dramani Mahama).

“We had a discussion thoroughly and on the very day he was going to endorse Nana Addo’s candidature, I saw that this is a delicate issue so I said… look we’ve taken a decision and the people who fought for you, you want to ignore them in your decisions because you want money and he (Agya Koo) was desperate for MONEY.”

He further disclosed that “the truth is that Agya Koo endorsed Nana Addo because of hunger.”

When asked by the host why he said that, he replied “He (Agya Koo) wasn’t ready to support Nana Addo but since he was prevented from seeing the President (John Dramani Mahama), adding that Agya Koo wanted to see the president and rather campaign for him.

The veteran actor together with his colleague actors like Matilda Asare and others recently launched “AGYA KOO AGENDA 57% FOR NANA ADDO” to support the campaign of the NPP in order to help bring the much needed change.

The Bureau of National investigations (BNI) has released Ghanaian-Lebanese Pilot and Author Fadi Daboussie, on self-recognizance bail Monday.

He was arrested around midday on Friday upon arrival from an Egypt Air flight from Lebanon.

It is not clear what caused his arrest as the BNI has not released a statement on the issue, but his lawyer Hassan Tampuli, told Kasapa News Monday that Mr Dabboussie was arrested because he has made several derogatory statements in his numerous articles about President John Mahama.

He’s said to have in one instance alleged that the President has impregnated one of the daughters of Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, a claim Mr Dabboussie has not denied, according to his lawyer.

Lawyer Hassan Tampuli was of the view that the arrest of his client was selected and unfair insisting that if Mr Dabboussie was arrested on the basis of the said article then he should have been accompanied with the editors of the Catalyst and Al Hajj Newspapers who first made the allegations.

Mr Dabboussie has not been charged yet but he’s been asked to report to the BNI on Friday.

Mr. Dabboussie who is said to be a staunch supporter of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), recently launched a book titled ‘59 years of Ghana to Nowhere: The future is Now,’ is President Mahama.

The story was first reported on social media, where it emerged that Mr. Dabboussi’s house was raided and all copies of the books taken. The BNI later returned the books.

A pro NPP group known as Ghana Must Know Forum, led by Hopeson Adorye had planned to picket at the BNI offices Monday Morning if Mr Dabbousie was still under detention.
