Gov’t denies removing over 4000 teachers from payroll

Government has dismissed reports claiming that over 4,000 teachers risked being expunged from the payroll following an International Monetary Fund(IMF) agreement with the state.

A statement issued and signed by the deputy Minister of Education, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa Sunday, August 21, 2016 asked the public to disregard such publication being circulated in sections of the media.

The statement indicated that the false publications are rather targeted at discrediting the efforts of government in the educational sector and create disaffection for government in an election year.

“This rather abysmal attempt at creating disaffection for the Government defies common sense especially at a time the Ministry of Education is recruiting more teachers and lecturers. Over the past few days, some 2,500 Mathematics and Science teachers have been receiving their appointment letters to teach at the basic level when the 2016/2017 academic year commences next month. Additionally, at the tertiary level, we have obtained financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance to employ another 1,018 lecturers and staff,” the statement said.

EC to introduce new voting booths December 7

The Electoral Commission is to replace the existing cardboard voting booths with plastic ones for the December 7 presidential and parliamentary polls.

The introduction of the new booths will phase out the cardboard booths which have been used for conduct of elections since Ghana’s return to constitutional democracy in 1992.

The EC a few months ago also outdoored a new logo alongside a five-year strategic plan, and as such, the introduction of the all-white plastic booths could only be in line with the rebranding agenda of the Commission, under the new chairperson Mrs. Charlotte Osei.

Mr. Fred Tetteh, an official of the EC’s Research, Monitoring and Evaluation Department gave the hint during a presentation on the Ghanaian electoral process at a pre-election training programme on Saturday for journalists of the Excellence in Broadcasting (EIB) Network, parent company of Starr FM and a host of other media outlets.

He explained the country’s electoral system is much better than that of Nigeria and Kenya because while a registered Ghanaian voter is allowed to vote during an election with/without a voter ID card, the reverse is the case in those countries.

“Our electoral process is such that, so far as a person’s name is on the register, that person can vote during the election even if he/she did not take along the voter ID card to the polling station. All that is required is for you to mention your name to the officer there, who will verify from the register.

“But in the case of Nigeria and Kenya, the I.D card is the only way you can be identified as a voter, so without it, you are automatically disenfranchised,” Mr. Tetteh explained.

The workshop held in Accra, was aimed at equipping the EIB election hub team with relevant knowledge and skills in readiness for the crucial polls in December.

National Coordinator for Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), Mr. John Larvie, who was one of the facilitators at the programme, also urged journalists to acquaint themselves with the electoral laws and legislations, in order to ensure accurate reportage on the electoral process.

The Police have uncovered a shooting range at Tema Community 3 where armed do their shooting rehearsals before launching their attacks on innocent and law abiding citizens.

The suspected armed robbers had created their new improvised shooting range at the Ramsar site at Tema where they use empty plastic bottles as their targets.

The move by the police follows a robbery attack by these suspects at the Tema Heavy Industrial area at 2am on Saturday where they attacked a steel manufacturing company, robbing a Chinese expatriate of his valuable items.

They were busily rehearsing when the police stormed their hideout following a tip-off. The suspects upon seeing the police opened fire on them and the police returned fire killing one instantly.

Two others are currently on the run and are being hunted by the police. A total of 72 cartridges and several empty plastic bottles which served as targets for the shooting rehearsals were retrieved by the police.

At a media briefing Sunday, the Tema Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Juliana Obeng urged the public to help the police arrest the suspects.

““If you live in an area or you are working at the hospital and you see somebody with gunshot wounds, kindly alert the police so we can follow up and arrest these persons.”

Hassan Ayariga’s APP pulls out of opposition parties demo against Mahama in Tamale

The All Peoples Party (APP) has boycotted the planned demonstration by opposition political parties in the Northern region today, Monday August 22, against President Mahama’s poor handling of the economy which has brought untold hardships on them.

The largest opposition party, the New Patriotic Party, leading the campaign together with the Convention People’s Party, the National Democratic Party, the Progressive People’s Party, the People’s National Convention, and Hassan Ayariga’s All Peoples Congress regional branches have all whipped up the interest of their supporters across the region towards the peaceful demonstration.

Dubbed “DI MI YA”, which translates in Dagbani “Times Are Hard,” the demonstration is intended to send strong signals to the Mahama-led administration vis a vis the prevailing “frail economy” culminating in the increasing poverty and deprivation of the North under his[Mahama] leadership.

Mohammed Abdul Kudu, the spokesperson for the organisers, said: “The leaders of all the opposition parties here, conscious of the depressing sentiment on the ground, had a series of meetings over several months and finally took a collective decision that we could not just sit there quietly whiles our people here in the North continued to endure worsening hardships with the President and his appointees showing no concern or care.”

He continued: “We believe we have been worst hit by the reckless economic management and corruption in the country. Our schools and hospitals are struggling with basic supplies. The sick are dying, our kids are failing in school. Our farms are dry. Our farmers are no longer getting the subsidised support they relied on from the state. We see billions of dollars being borrowed and spent, but harvests here continue to be poor because no investments in irrigation by the state and the inputs have ceased coming.

“The young people, as well as business owners, are completely disillusioned. Those with jobs are struggling. Many have lost their jobs and many businesses have closed down because of killer electricity tariffs. And, when hundreds of millions of dollars are spent in our name, like with SADA, we the intended beneficiaries do not benefit and not a single person is punished. It can only mean that the President supports the insulting treatment we are receiving.”

But in an interview Monday, the General Secretary of the All Peoples Party Razak Kwadwo Poku urged its members to stay away from the protest march as it doesn’t have the blessing of the party’s National executives, organizers of the protest march disrespected them by not officially notifying the party.

“We are making it clear that the APP is not in any coalition with opposition parties be it at the National, Regional or Constituency level, so if the NPP, CPP, NDP and the rest want to go on a demonstration they should desist from using APP’s name as part of the exercise to score cheap political points.”

He added: “Any party member who is found to have taken part will be disciplined, the party will not countenance such indiscipline. We have not authorized our regional or constituency offices to go on this demonstration We are rather focused on selling our Presidential candidate and Parliamentary candidates to the electorates. APP is not interested in using demonstrations to win the hearts of Ghanaians.”

Azorka boys jump into anti-gov’t protest march…Police to the rescue

The ongoing Di Mi Ya demonstration by the coalition of opposition parties in Tamale almost plunged into chaos when NDC allied forces and vigilante group Azorka Boys clashed with the demonstrators at a point during the protest.

“The demonstrators have been on the streets since morning. But we don’t know where the Azorka Boys came from, all we saw was that they had entered the crowd and the confrontation began but the police were at the Traffic Light Junction so they stopped them,” a local reporter with Diamond FM said.

The Coalition of Opposition Political Parties, made up of the NPP, the People’s National Convention (PNC), the Convention People’s Party (CPP), and the National Democratic Party (NDP), are today, 22 August, embarking on a demonstration at a time President John Dramani Mahama is starting his campaign in the region ahead of this year’s presidential elections.

An earlier planned was scheduled for the President to touch down today in the Northern regional capital, Tamale, but latest communication from his handlers and the campaign team has indicated his first stop will rather be in the Salaga south district where he will pay a courtesy call on the newly enskinned Kpembewura.

The President wouldn’t have had the serenity to campaign in Tamale as his presence would have been overshadowed by a major protest by the coalition of opposition parties in the region who have resisted attempts by the Northern Regional police command to shelve their demonstration and are vigorously protesting today.

Interacting with Fiifi Banson on Mahama’s tour of the Northern region on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM, the Northern regional Secretary of the NDC, Halidu Rauf said the President won’t be on the grounds to campaign amidst the noise making activities from the NPP and its cohorts set to destabilize the metropolis for President Mahama’s campaign.

The Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Ken Yeboah who earlier wanted to block the demonstration for some reasons said although the president was going to be in the region at the time of the demonstration, he would not be in the area where the demonstration would be held, thus, the decision to allow for the demonstration on Monday.

The trio, according to the communication, would be freed on Friday, August 26, 2016.

The President’s directive, it adds, was based on the recommendation by the Council of State to remit the remaining prison sentence imposed on the trio; Salifu Maase, aka, Mugabe, Alistair Nelson and Godwin Ako Gunn.

The three were sentenced to four months imprisonment with a fine of GH₵10,000.00 each for contempt of court.

“The decision of His Excellency the President to remit their sentences on compassionate grounds follows a petition submitted to him by the contemnors appealing to the President to exercise his prerogative of mercy even as they continue to express deep remorse and regret for the unacceptable statements they made against the Judiciary”, the statement in part read.

The statement however, reminded all “Ghanaians of the need to respect the institutions of State and exercise freedom of speech responsibly mindful of the need to preserve peace and national unity”.

That aside, it said “all concerned especially persons working in the media or appearing on its platforms to be circumspect and guard against the use of intemperate language which has the potential of causing unnecessary tension especially in this election year”.

Below is the full statement:

Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Koku Anyidoho could not hide his joy as he burst into singing praises to God over the decision by President John Mahama to grant pardon to the infamous Montie 3 contemnors.

A communication from the Flagstaff on Monday announced that President John Dramani Mahama had directed the Ghana Prisons Service to free the Montie 3.

The trio, according to the communication, would be freed on Friday, August 26, 2016.

The President’s directive, it added, was based on the recommendation by the Council of State to remit the remaining prison sentence imposed on the trio; Salifu Maase, aka, Mugabe, Alistair Nelson and Godwin Ako Gunn.

The three were sentenced to four months imprisonment with a fine of GH₵10,000.00 each for contempt of court, after they threatened the lives of the Supreme Court Judges.

A statement signed by Communications Minister, Dr. Omane Boamah said the three have served part of the prison sentences imposed on them and also paid GH₵10,000.00 fines.

In an interview with Kasapa News, Koku Anyidoho expressed gratitude to President Mahama for heeding the call of NDC supporters and ensuring the release of the trio.

He disagreed with suggestions that the pardon granted will undermine the authority of the Judiciary and further promote unsavoury language on the airwaves.

“We thank the President for his kind gesture which is backed by due process of the law. We’ve all learnt lessons from this case, moving forward everyone will be guided in the way he/she conducts him or herself in the media.”

Use of indecent language: NPP far BETTER than NDC – Presby Moderator

The blunt and outspoken man of God’s position is in sharp contrast with the findings of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) language monitoring report for July, which shows the NPP tops political parties that use indecent language on radio.

In the June report, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) beat the NPP in the use of indecent expressions on radio.
During the month, a total of 44 indecent expressions were recorded on a total of 1,474 radio programmes monitored on 60 radio stations across the country.

Officials, supporters and members of the NPP made a total of 17 indecent expressions followed by officials, supporters and affiliates of the ruling NDC who made a total of 7 indecent expressions, said MFWA.

But speaking during the 16th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church on Monday, August 22, which was addressed by the NPP Flagbearer Nana Akufo Addo who described the Presbyterian Church as “a progressive partner in the project of the self-confident and prosperous Ghana that my Party seeks to build.”the Moderator said even though leaders of the various political parties have failed to publicly condemn their members who use indecent language on air, in his opinion the NPP is doing well.

“I’m yet to hear condemnation from any political leader whose members use indecent language on the radio and other places. Honestly there are one or two I’ve heard from NPP who might be using indecent language, but compared to other parties you are doing better” The challenges you have posed, we are taking it seriously,” the Moderator told Nana Akufo Addo.

Controversial Pastor of the International God’s Way Chapel, Daniel Obinim, has been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department for an alleged complicity in a fraudulent case.

Obinim was reported to the Regional Headquarters of the Ghana Police by a Gold Dealer for defrauding him of an amount of 11. 6 million Ghana cedis.

In an exclusive interview with Kasapa News, CID PRO, ASP Benefo Darkwah said the Gold Dealer had consulted a Fetish Priest (name only given as Dzakpasu) in November of 2015, on a family gold business deal that had 780, 000 cedis in proceeds and he wanted some deity rights done over the said amount. Subsequently, the Fetish Priest failed to help out. The gold dealer then reached out to Obinim to help him retrieve the said amount from the Fetish Priest, spiritually.

Obinim, Darkwah added, asked the Gold Dealer to part ways with an extra 11.6 million cedis, being remaining sum from the sale of the family gold treasures, if he is to help him out. He failed to work magic for him afterwards, leading to a compliant being lodged for his subsequent arrest today.

Darkwah told Kasapa News, the CID will also hand him over to the DOVVSU of the Ghana Police concerning the other case in which he has been captured on tape beating two teen members of his church.

He was arrested Tuesday for allegedly defrauding a gold dealer to the sum of GHS11.6million and was detained over night at the Nima Police Station in Accra after being transferred from Tema to the Accra Police headquarters for questioning.

He’s being charged for defrauding under false pretense.

Meanwhile, Bishop Obinim has said he knows nothing about the alleged GHS11.6 million gold fraud.

Lawyer for Obinim, Samuel Atta Akyea told Fiifi Banson on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM Wednesday in an interview that his client had denied defrauding the complainant in question by false pretense as being alleged.

Meanwhile, Bishop Obinim and one other associate Pastor have been charged with assault.

The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection filed a complaint against Bishop Obinim at the Accra regional office of DOVVSU last week for publicly lashing two teenagers in his church for fornication.

In the presence of the whole congregation, last Wednesday evening, the Bishop removed his belt, and beat the amorous young couple and later invited one of his assistant Pastors to join in the action. He was captured in a short video which has since gone viral on social media.

Also Human Rights Lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu and two others have filed suits against the pastor seeking to have the bishop arrested and prosecuted for his conduct.WhatsApp Image 2016-08-24 at 09.33.36

Bishop Obinim who’s known to have healing powers and has done a lot of miracles albeit sometimes described as fake by a section of the public, was arrested Tuesday for allegedly defrauding a gold dealer to the sum of GHS11.6million and was detained over night in the Police cells after being transferred from Tema to the Accra Police headquarters for questioning.

But supporters of Bishop Obinim whom stayed at the Nima Police Station all night and have vowed to remain there until their spiritual father is released have said the country will record the death of several sick persons if Bishop Obinim is not discharged.

“The arrest of Obinim is born out of jealousy… this pure hatred against him just because he’s being used mightily by God to perform wonders in Ghana. Just yesterday two sick people brought to church to be healed died because Bishop Obinim has been arrested. Several sick people will die if he’s not released immediately,” the members said.

Most campaign promises by political parties empty – IMANI report

Policy think-tank IMANI-Ghana has punched holes into many of the campaign promises by political parties describing it as empty.

A special report captured on major campaign promises made by at least six main political parties – NDC, NPP, PPP, CPP, NDC and PNC, IMANI depicts that out of the 247 promises made collectively by the parties, only 18 can be assessed.
data
Presenting the findings at a forum, a researcher with the think-tank, Sefan Reppan said the research was unfortunately overwhelmed with non-quantifiable promises, hence predicting this will hamper informed decision of electorates in the upcoming polls.

“A total of 247 promises were identified, out of this 18 were quantifiable, 43 were semi-quantifiable, and 186 were non-quantifiable. So it is clear that the vast majority of the promises that the parties present are not assessable and are empty promises,” he added. “…I do want to highlight that the report is tentative, we do make a lot of assumptions but we want to put rough numbers out there and especially in my opinion we want to push the parties to provide a financial plan and a cost benefit analysis to back up every promise that they make to the Ghanaian people. Because three fourth of the promises are non-quantifiable, it’s impossible to make a holistic feasibility analysis of the whole policy set,” he explained.

Montie 3 to be freed today

The infamous Montie 3 will today,  Friday, August 26, be released from Prison following a Presidential pardon from their conviction and four-month jail term.

Alistair Nelson, Godwin Ako Gunn and Salifu Maase, were in July incarcerated for criminal contempt of court after they threatened the lives of Supreme Court Justices on a live Montie FM radio programme.

Their incarceration saw a petition book opened on their behalf by their sympathizers and mostly signed by top government officials and their followers compelling President Mahama to evoke his prerogative of mercy powers under Article 72 of the 1992 constitution.

A statement signed by the Minister of Communications, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah on Monday, August 22 said that the President had taken the decision to pardon the three on ‘compassionate grounds’ given the remorse they had demonstrated.

Alistair Nelson, Godwin Ako Gunn and Salifu Maase, Kasapafmonline.com understands, were moved out of the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons, their first point of call, at about 8:00pm on Monday, some few hours after President John Mahama announced a remission of their sentence.

The exit of the trio, Kasapafmonline.com understands will take place at the Ankaful Prison where they were finally transferred to.
