Our plight must be a lesson to you – Montie trio tells journos

The Montie trio say they have learnt their lesson from their incarceration  urging colleague journalists to learn from their mistake.

The infamous Montie 3 were today,  Friday, August 26, released from Prison following a Presidential pardon from their conviction and four-month jail term.

Alistair Nelson, Godwin Ako Gunn and Salifu Maase, were in July incarcerated for criminal contempt of court after they threatened the lives of Supreme Court Justices on a live Montie FM radio programme.

Addressing teeming supporters at the forecourt of Montie FM in Accra on Friday, the trio admonished practitioners within the media fraternity to learn from their mistake.

“We have learnt our lesson and will like to reiterate President Mahama’s call to our fellow media practitioners and all who appear on our platforms to take a cue from what happened to us and be circumspect in our utterances,” they stated.

“We agree that we have a responsibility to our country to [have] peace in this election year and to respect institutions of state. We will continue to practise our profession and be mindful of all these,” they promised.

The three were jailed on 27 July 2016 and served one month of the four-month prison term through a Presidential pardon. They also paid GHS10,000 each as fines for threatening to kill justices of the Superior Court.

A 39 year old popular Pastor, Prophet Bismarck Anokye aka ‘Bonsam Abodam’ a resident of Dunkwa Offin in the Central Region suffered probably the worst disgrace of his life when he was stripped by an alcohol (Akpeteshie) seller for owing her.

Bystanders were thrown into a state of utter shock when they got to know that the pastor owed the beer bar operator a debt of GHC80.00 being the cost of akpeteshie drink and cigarettes he had consumed.

The ‘man of God’ who usually preaches at various big markets in the region and sometimes in the Western Region as well, is known for admonishing people to turn away from their bad deeds and live righteous and exemplary lives which are acceptable unto God.

Little did residents know that the pastor uses the little offering he receives after preaching on a drinking spree consuming strong alcohol and smoking cigarettes.

After drinking the akpeteshie and smoking cigarettes to the said amount Prophet Bismarck Anokye then stopped visiting the drinking spot and started using another route to and fro his home to avoid being caught.

Luck however eluded him when the akpeteshie seller spotted him seated at the front position of a commercial vehicle (trotro), at Ayamfuri the woman who would not let the opportunity slip by raised an alarm following which the vehicle was stopped and the ‘man of God’ questioned.

He admitted to owing the woman and begged the latter to allow him some time to pay his debt but the angry woman who had no mercy on him, forcibly took off the pastor’s clothing and footwear to pay up for the cost of the akpteshie and cigarettes.

Executives of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bekwai Constituency, Friday, called on three local deities in the area to curse whoever destroyed a billboard of their parliamentary candidate, Mary Gyantua.

A billboard of the candidate located in one of the junctions in the community has been destroyed by unkwown persons.

It is not the first time Mary Gyantua has gone through such a situation. The candidate has had her posters also destroyed some months ago.

The party executives who could not condone such acts anymore have therefore resorted to calling on the spirits of the land to give them protection.

One of the executives whose name is immediately not known was spotted with a bottle of schnapp calling on the three local deities to deal with whoever destroyed the billboard of their parliamentary candidate.

“Whoever destroyed NDC billboard at this junction, if you are a child and have no sense or don’t have voting right … whoever votes but deliberately wants to destroy we NDC our billboard, Nana Mpotor this is your drink, Nana Nyanteh this is your drink, Asuo Bobri this is your drink. Teach them some lessons. Whey you are finished with them, use their family members to appease yourself. If you are unable to do this, then it means you deities don’t exist. We NDC invoke this curse. Thank you”.

A total of 39 female Ghanaian pilgrims have been repatriated from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Pilgrims Affairs Office Ghana (PAOG) has announced.

Nine persons out of the number are minors while 30 are inappropriately categorized as without guardians because they are less than 40 years.

A statement released from the Pilgrims Office said the Saudi Ambassador to Ghana is working with the PAOG Chairman Hon. Ibrahim Rauf Tanko and Immigration Officers to rectify the situation as soon as possible.

“The Kingdom requires all ladies less than 40 years entering the Kingdom Hajj to be accompanied by an adult male relative. Insha Allah it is our hope that when it is done the affected pilgrims will return to continue their pilgrimage.” the statement noted.

GJA faces contempt charges for crowning Anas best Journalist of the year

Counsel for High Court Judge found guilty in the Judicial corruption scandal, Justice Paul Derry has condemned the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) for adjudging ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas best Journalist of the year.

The renowned undercover journalist over the weekend was celebrated for his work, taking home a Hyundai SUV plus a certificate and a plaque as his prize.

His work on the judicial corruption scandal in 2015 which exposed deep seated rot in the arm of government took the nation by surprise even though it is widely known there’s some corruption in the judiciary.

Anas’ Tiger Eye PI team’s investigations captured some 22 lower court judges and 12 High Court judges captured on video, allegedly taking bribes to influence justice.

So far, 20 of the lower court judges have been removed from office including some of their superiors.

But in an interview with Joy News, Justice Derry’s Lawyer Nii Kpakpo Addo, maintained that the GJA acted in contempt of court because the stories that won Anas the prize is still being contested at the Supreme Court.

“The Supreme Court of this land has stated that the action of Anas Aremeyaw Anas and Tiger PI are unlawful in respect of showing the said video to the general public is unconstitutional and flies in the face of common sense. Secondly there are ongoing court proceedings and you still go ahead and say you are awarding the person, it is actually in contempt of court. Even if we don’t say anything at all…it is a shame. One of the Judges are taking it up, because if for nothing at all a precedent must be set.”

Remove Martey from National Peace Council – Twum Boafo urges

The Executive Secretary of the Ghana Free Zones Board, Kwadwo Twum Boafo is incensed about the conduct of renowned cleric and immediate past Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey in the public space calling for his removal from the National Peace Council.

He said Prof. Martey cannot continue to serve a dignified office when worse things have in the past been uttered by the Man of God, which seem to polarize the society and deepen the problems in Ghana’s politics.

“He’s mortgaged the whole of the Presby church to NPP…I’ve been talking about this for many years and when I started saying it members of my party disagreed with me; Was I wrong or right? This same man goes to stand on pulpit and say that the President doesn’t have sense and nobody arrested him. Now he’s coupled the Presbyterian Church with the NPP. And he’s on the Peace Council- I wonder who put him there and why he should continue being there,” a livid Twum Boafo said on Radio Gold’s Alhaji and Alhaji political show Saturday.

Boafo’s remark comes in the wake of Prof. Martey’s assurances he gave recently to the 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, that the Church stands ready to partner with his party[NPP] to build Ghana.

That was in response to an appeal by Nana Akufo-Addo who, whilst addressing the 16thGeneral Assembly of the Presbyterian Church on Monday, August 22, described the Presbyterian Church as a progressive partner in the project of the self-confident and prosperous Ghana that the NPP seeks to build.

But the outspoken cleric have since been condemned by elements of the governing National Democratic Congress for his alleged affinity with the largest opposition NPP.

On the replacement of Prof. Martey’s position, Twum Boafo however had a word for the new moderator urging him to steer away from the wrong direction the past moderator- Prof. Martey led the Pesby Church into and exude the mark of a true christian leader.

“I’m happy that the Presbyterian Church has a new Moderator. And i hope and pray that this new moderator will steer himself away from some of these things. I’m told that over 170 Pastors wanted to become the new moderator; It tells me that many of them were unhappy with the direction Rev. Martey was taking the Church. I’m happy that from what I read of him[new Moderator] he seems like a moderate person. I hope that he doesn’t go and be a Judas and sell the Presby Church to the NPP for a few shekels of silver.”

REVEALED: Two suspected police armed robbers in GCB bullion van attack were aided to escape

Two Police officers who were arrested in connection with an attempted robbery attack on GCB bullion in which the driver was killed escaped from Police custody while they were being sent to the Eastern Regional Police Command in Kororidua for questioning.

The duo upon reaching Nkawkaw reportedly asked the driver to stop and allow them to urinate and in the process absconded. News of their escape angered residents of Donkorkrom who took the law into their own hands and took to the streets vandalized property including burning down the police station.

The police mounted a manhunt for the escapees and subsequently arrested them.

Appearing before the Mpraeso Circuit Court in the Eastern Region on Monday, the two ‘criminal’ police officers told the Presiding Judge Miriam Solace Sinare that Corporal  Christopher Babudu, used a key to open the handcuffs for them hence they are not guilty of the escaping from lawful custody charge.

Agoo FM’s Abena Pokua reported that  Corporal  Christopher Babudu explained he was unable to shoot the suspects while they were escaping because he didn’t want to shoot an innocent percent in the process as there were lots of people around the scene.

The Armed robbers a fortnight ago attacked a GCB Bank bullion van at Maame Krobo killing the driver instantly with a police officer who was escorting the van sustaining gunshot wounds. They however failed to flee with their booty.

The case has been adjourned to September 8.

Bring back NPP trio…group opens petition book for Afoko, Agyepong & Crabbe’s reinstatement

A group calling itself the National Confederacy of NPP Youth will on Friday start gathering signatures in Kumasi to impress upon the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party, to reinstate the three suspended National Executive Officers of the Elephant family.

The petition book which will be opened in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region will go round the ten regions of the country to enable NPP supporters who want these executives to re-occupy their positions to append their signatures.

National Chairman, Paul Afoko, General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong and First Vice Chairman, Sammy Crabbe were suspended by the NEC last year for acts of misconduct which were deem not to be in the interest of the party. This was after a recommendation by the Disciplinary Committee to let the trio step aside.

But in an interview, Leader of the National Confederacy of NPP Youth, Tweneboah Kodua stated that just as President John Mahama remitted the jail term of the infamous Montie 3 ex prisoners which saw their release last week, Nana Akufo Addo should learn from President Mahama and ensure the return of the NPP trio.

“The NPP should learn from the deeds of the NDC, just as the Council of State advised President Mahama to pardon the jailed Montie 3 which he did, we are also asking our Council of State (NPP National Executive Committee) to advise our shadow President (Akufo Addo) to listen to the Committee so that when we present the petition, he uses his influence to make sure that Paul Afoko, Kwabena Agyepong and Sammy Crabbe are reinstated.”

Tweneboah Kodua added: “This is a test case between the NEC of our Party and the Council of State of the NDC, which is equally made up of party people. Mahama’s campaign theme is that our party is divided, this is the time to stop that propaganda by the President and the only way is to bring these suspended executives back. Politics is about numbers and not strictly obeying party laws.”

Bawku Naba, Garu Naba endorse Akufo-Addo

The paramount Chief of Bawku, Naba Asigiri Azoka Abugrago II, has described as false reports indicating that he has endorsed the candidature of President John Mahama ahead of the conduct of this year’s elections.

According to him, reports, which emanated in the aftermath of the visit of President Mahama to his palace earlier this month, that he had declared his support for the President are not true.

The Bawku Naba explained that, when President Mahama visited him, “I was in possession of a white handkerchief. The journalists present alleged that this was an endorsement of President Mahama. It is not true. The same way I am dressed before Nana is the same way I was dressed before the President.”

Naba Asigiri Azoka Abugrago II, without hesitation, indicated that “this is the proper endorsement I want to make. God willing this year, you will get what you want and become the President of Ghana.”

The Paramount Chief of Bawku made this known on Monday, August 29, when the 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, paid a courtesy call on him at his palace, as part of his tour of the Upper East Region.

Garu Chief endorses Akufo-Addo

Whilst in the Bawku Zone, Nana Akufo-Addo also received a ringing endorsement from the Chief of Garu, Naba Asuguru Akuntam Wini, who declared his support for the NPP flagbearer in this year’s elections.

According to the Chief, the NPP has a rich history of delivering on its electoral promises, and is in no doubt that voting for Nana Akufo-Addo will only bring progress and prosperity to his people.

“Our problem, in the past, was a district. President Kufuor, before the 2000 elections, came here and told us that if he won the election, it will be done. True to his word, the creation of the district was done. When NPP promises you something, it will be done. Thanks to his Excellency, President Kufuor, for giving us the district,” he said.

The Chief appealed to Nana Akufo-Addo to construct a district hospital in Garu, when he wins the elections. The appeal for the construction of the hospital, according to the Chief, stems from the “propaganda” being churned out by activists and functionaries of the ruling government, who claim the Garu District hospital is at various stages of completion. The Garu Naba indicated that this claim was completely false.

Additionally, with the mainstay of the residents of Garu being agriculture, Naba Asuguru Akuntam Wini noted that the desire of farmers in Garu is for an all-year-round agriculture. This, he explained, can be achieved by the construction of an irrigation dam at Tamve. This, he added, will help alleviate the poverty of the people of Garu.

“I listen to the radio all the time and I have heard your campaign promises – ‘1-District-1-Factory’, ‘1-Village-1-Dam’. These promises have touched my heart. Just as President Kufuor fulfilled his promise to us, please fulfill these promises to us also when you win the election,” he urged the NPP flagbearer.

On the deplorable nature of the roads in Garu, the Chief wondered when the much touted ‘Eastern Corridor’ road development will “reach Garu”. He appealed to the NPP flagbearer that “when you win, let that road be your priority. It will help our pregnant women, it will help our people and it will reduce accidents and people can be able to move safely.”

In concluding, Naba Asuguru Akuntam Wini noted, with worry, that the National Health Insurance Scheme, under President Mahama, is no longer functioning in Garu.

“The NPP brought us the NHIS. But, today, the NHIS is no more. It is just in name and not by action or practice”, a clear indication by the Garu Naba that the scheme had collapsed.

Our priority is a dam

In Tempane, Nana Akufo-Addo visited Kpatia, a village in the constituency, where he called on the family of the late Alhaji Imoro Ayarna, a former Minister of State in the First Republic, who passed away last year, to pay his respects.

Appreciative of the NPP flagbearer’s gesture to the family, the head of the Imoro Ayarna family, Imoro Ayarna, who happens to be the son of the late Statesman, indicated that there are “people who were his sons, and some who knew him, but never came here. We are grateful (for your visit).”

On what constitutes the main concern of the people of Kpatia, he stated that “our priority in Kpatia, once you’re in government with you team, is a dam. Our second priority is a dam. Our third priority is a dam.”

AUDIO: Politicians tried bribing me with $100,000 to keep quiet – Moderator

The outgoing Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt Rev. Prof Emmanuel Martey is claiming that some politicians tried bribing him with an amount of $100,000 in order to stop him from his harsh criticisms of happenings he considers wrong in the country.

According to man of God these politicians he failed to name also promised him of a mansion at Trassaco and a four wheel drive which he declined.

Rt. Rev. Prof. Martey, an outspoken prophet is known to speak his mind publicly on issues of public interest and is also not shy to touch on political issues, an area which is out of bounds for most pastors.

He has in the past received backlash from supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) including ministers when he has spoken on matters that the party considers not favourable.

Over the weekend for instance, an incensed Executive Secretary of the Ghana Free Zones Board, Kwadwo Twum Boafo stated that the conduct of renowned cleric and immediate past Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rev.

And he’s on the Peace Council- I wonder who put him there and why he should continue being there,” a livid Twum Boafo said on Radio Gold’s Alhaji and Alhaji political show Saturday.

But speaking to the media in Accra Tuesday, Rt Rev. Prof. Martey stated that nobody including politician can gag him not even through bribes as he’s not bribable.

“Listen politicians have tried all means to muzzle me but they can’t. Politicians came to my house with bribes, fat envelopes, $100,000. And also with the promises that if you keep quiet we’ll give you a house at Trassaco with swimming pool and four wheel drives. These people were lucky that I did not have big dogs in my house, else I would have released the dogs to bite them so that the whole world to ask Papa Moderator why are you so cruel and I will them tell, ask what they came to do.

He added:”You know what, they have tried all means to muzzle me but they couldn’t and they can’t. You know what I will speak today, and speak tomorrow. You know the tax I pay, when my pay slip comes and I see the tax I pay, I get frightened, but at the same time I say praise be to God because it’s going to build our Nation. Then when my tax goes, you babies with sharp teethes steal the money and you don’t want us to talk? We will talk today and talk tomorrow. Barely nine months after 48-year-old farmer Ibrahim Musah, was adjudged the 2015 National Best Farmer he’s yet to receive the car which forms part of his prize package.

According to him, he’s now fed up of asking the Ministry when his car will be presented to him as promised.

For his prize, Ibrahim Musah was to receive a three-bedroom house, a car, GH¢3,000 from Kasapreko Distilleries, a desk top computer with printer, a lap top and a certificate.

He won the award with a record of cultivating 207 acres of maize, 10 acres of cocoyam, a seven-acre cassava plantation, 12 acres of citrus, 10 acres of plantain, two acres of okro, six acres of yam, one acre of tomatoes, 20 acres of teak, 12 acres of oil palm and two acres of pepper.

With poultry and livestock as at last year, he had 150,000 layers, 40 guinea fowls, 80 goats and sheep, 40 herds of cattle, 70 local birds, 49 turkeys, as well as the cultivation of mushroom, tilapia and cat fish ponds, among others.

Speaking with Kasapa News, Ibrahim Musah, who confirmed that the house is being built for him, however stated that he’s displeased about the long wait in receiving the car.

“I have asked the deputy Minister of Agric, Hanah Bissiw repeatedly about this car, but she keeps telling me to have patience…it is nine months down the line and I’m yet to hear anything convincing about me receiving the car. On the internet it is indicated that the prize includes a house and a car. By the month of October, ahead of the event in December  I’ll have to hand over to a new person who will be selected for the award, and all attention will be focused on him/her. My predecessor has told me he never received a car as part of the prize package, so I may have to forget about the car.”

Meanwhile, officials of the Ministry of Agriculture have been unavailable to speak to the issue.

NDC dares Moderator to name politicians he claims tried bribing him

The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has dared the outgoing Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt Rev. Prof Emmanuel Martey, to name the politicians he alleges tried to bribe him with $100,000 in order to gag him.

The man of God at a Press conference on Tuesday claimed that the said politicians whose names he failed to mention also promised him a mansion at Trassaco and a four wheel drive which he declined.

Rt Rev. Prof. Martey who is known to speak his mind on socio-political issues and has been a critic of the Mahama-led administration stated that nobody including politician can gag him not even through bribes as he’s not bribable.

“Listen, politicians have tried all means to muzzle me but they can’t. Politicians came to my house with bribes, fat envelopes… $100,000. And also with the promises that if you keep quiet we’ll give you a house at Trassaco with swimming pool and four wheel drive. These people were lucky that I did not have big dogs in my house, else I would have released the dogs to bite them for the whole world to ask Papa Moderator why are you so cruel and I will tell them, ask them what they came to do.

He added:”You know what, they have tried all means to muzzle me but they couldn’t and they can’t. You know, what I will speak today, and speak tomorrow. You know the tax I pay, when my pay slip comes and I see the tax I pay, I get worried, but at the same time I say praise be to God because it’s going to build our Nation. Then when my tax goes, you babies with sharp teethes steal the money and you don’t want us to talk? We will talk today and talk tomorrow. I pay tax but some of them don’t pay tax. Even the petrol allowance that is given me I pay tax on each gallon.”

But reacting to the Moderator’s comments on Starr News, the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, George Lawson will not be allowed to make such blanket statements unchecked.

“No astute politician will behave like the people he’s talking about, no politician will come to you a man of God with $100,000 in envelopes, meanwhile that amount cannot go into any fat envelopes. If you say chop boxes then may be fine, but not envelopes. All I can deduce from that is that may be he was just being trapped. He’s mentioned $100,000, did he count the money for him to know it was $100,000. When someone says they brought me that amount it means he either saw it or countered it. We in the NDC believe in the freedom of speech, so if Prof. Martey believes something is going wrong, he’s free to speak; nobody is preventing him from commenting on national or any issues at all.”

He also dismissed claims by the Moderator that some supposed NDC members called him on phone and insulted him.

“The calls that he received, did it come with the caller ID as NDC on the phone? Please let’s be serious, he’s a  man of God…the Pope has been insulted more than him, but have you seen the Pope reacting this way,” Mr Lawson asked?

Parliament resumes sitting today over Mahama Ford gift saga

Members of Parliament will convene today [Thursday], for an emergency sitting following a recall from their recess by the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho.

The emergency sitting is necessitated after a  circular emerged August 27, recalling parliament to sit Thursday September 1.

This is in pursuance of Article 112(3) of the constitution and order 38(1) of the standing orders of Parliament, the circular stressed.

Some  legislators in the minority side are predicting a show down today as some information points to the fact that the main agenda for the day will be the petition brought against the President Ford gift saga and subsequently the minority’s concerns put forth on the matter.

A motion dated August 3, 2016, reveals the Minority’s attempt to get Parliament to constitute a special Parliamentary Committee to investigate the following:

  1. Whether the President of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama received a Ford Expedition Vehicle from a Burkinabe Contractor.
  2. Whether the Ford Expedition Vehicle received by the President infringes any law of Ghana
  3. Whether the Ford Expedition Vehicle donated to the President infringes his own code of conduct.
  4. Any other matter relevant to the above subject.

However, majority leader, Alban Bagbin believes the recall mainly in connection with the infamous Mahama’s Ford gift saga is unnecessary and a waste of resources and time.

In his view, the proposed motion calling on the House to set up a bipartisan Committee to investigate the President is just to dent the image of the President ahead of a crucial poll.

Customers of Brong Ahafo-based DKM Microfinance Company who were months ago swindled in a bunco scheme by the financial institution will begin receiving their locked up investments by the end of September, 2016.

The Registrar-General’s Department has been officially charged to liquidate the sums of monies due for the victims of DKM through two local banks contracted to make the payments to customers by the end of September.

At least 70,000 customers were so far validated to receive their locked up cash.

The rogue microfinance scheme managed to convince customers of over 45 percent returns on their investments quarterly. This assurance made many people deposit various amounts of money in the Bunco bank.

But to the chargrin of customers, the DKM’s offices were empty and locked when their investments matured and it was time for the company to redeem its obligation to clients.

Many depositors have lost their life-long savings as a result of the scandalous operations of the company.

The Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Edward Doe Adjaho has dismissed a motion filed by the Minority in Ghana’s Parliament to impeach President John Dramani Mahama.

He threw out the motion based on technical grounds on Thursday after the House was recalled from recess for an emergency meeting.

Mr Adjaho in a show of his powers rejected the motion and asked the Clerk of Parliament to return the motion to the Member of Parliament (MP) who filed it.

He indicated that the matter was already under investigations by a constitutional body, which is the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

Background

The Minority in Parliament filed a motion seeking a Parliamentary investigation into the controversial ford gift received by president Mahama from his Burkinabe contractor friend.

The group further wanted Parliament to establish whether the president breached the constitution by accepting the Ford gift and if it infringed the president’s own code of conduct.

More soon.

Former President J.A Kufour says he is hugely disappointed that Ghana failed to become a financial hub in Africa.

According to him, his administration put in place pragmatic steps within the financial sector to see this dream being realized but sadly successive governments failed to see through some of the policies he initiated as  President.

Speaking at a Joy FM thought leadership event in Accra where he addressed youth from various tertiary institutions ex President Kufour cited examples including the plan to establish an off-shore bank in Ghana which he argues could have impacted positively on the economy.

“If the election of 2008 had come my way, that is if my side had won, then the many things we put on course would have matured. For instance at that point we had secured the partnership of Barclays International to do an off-shore banking here in Ghana. We set up offices, we made all the laws and if that project had been maintained and sustained perhaps much of the monies from Southern Europe and the continent of Africa would be here. Ghana would be managing the hard currencies of our neighbourhood and as far as the fields of Europe.”

He added: “But because my party didn’t win, within a year after our losing, the succeeding regime just canceled the agreement. That hurts, I couldn’t understand it then…and I can’t understand it now, because it would have added to the good of our economy.”

The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) has directed workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana to withdraw services in a two-day sit down strike until government backs down on its concession plan.

The ECG workers union at a just ended crunch meeting resolved to have a sit down strike from morning to evening in which workers have been directed to wear red bands to further press home their displeasure over the attempt by the government to privatise the utility company.

“All staff across ECG operational areas are to report to work but no official duties will be carried out today 2nd September, 2016 and Monday 5th September 2016.

“All staff are to wear red attire to work on Monday. All the above actions are in protest of MIDA’s gross disrespect, lack of transparency and lack of trust. All members are to take note and comply,” the circular added.

It however, directed ECG staff to attend to “critical areas like hospital theaters as well as security installations…should a fault occur.”

Workers of the ECG who are members of PUWU last week demonstrated against the concessionary agreement which will cede the management of the state-power distributor to a private company.

PUWU, wants a review of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact which they claimed has the roadmap for massive lay-offs.

The exercise saw an intense three hour strike in all ECG offices across the country.
